I've got nothing more to say. I guess I'm just excited. Another quarter year until shipment, but I guess I will forget about it as I did before and then again be surprised 😅

I pre-ordered at the start, but opted to cancel.

There were a couple of question marks over chip manufacture and compatibility via the Android layer that i wasn't sure about, and it hit me that what i really wanted was to distance myself entirely from the pocket computer.

I've got a de-googled, open source tablet if i need to do anything, a computer, and a phone if i want to make or receive a call.

Keeping me hooked into the 24 hour news cycle, surveillance capitalist drama, isn't something i should be nurturing.

I feel myself approaching that too despite my interest in Jolla. Was thinking about nixing the smart phone for just some cheap flip phone to make calls and being done with all this stuff. I’m already degoogled and off social media except Lemmy, and the jury is still out on whether or not I’ll stick around.

The hardware looks great. I figure it's about time for saturated colors to come back into tech after a decade of shades of black and white.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Totally agree. I am waiting for the reviews!

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

Tbh, i would have loved a pastel-tinted transparent shell

[–] brb@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It looks great except they still haven't announced what the screen refresh rate will be... If it's 60/90hz I might have to skip, no matter how good it is otherwise

[–] Sequence5666@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Well, it really doesnt matter for majority of us. As long its. Cheap and privacy focused we are good

[–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m hoping they expand to the US. Their OS looks so slick.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You could import it yourself, the hardware should be working.

[–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Now that’s an idea.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sadly not, but they are planning to have an ... attachment to increase interoperability.

Me too
I'm kinda afraid, that some stuff won't work and I can't keep it as a daily driver, but at the same time I'm super hyped 😁

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To be honest, I'm not expecting it to be my daily driver, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if.

[–] naeap@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, come on, don't kill my dream of having a fully functional Linux phone with Android App support ;-)

At least it's my plan to use it as a daily driver
As just a gimmick, it would be too expensive. So yeah, I really hope to replace my Android phone with it.

Maybe I need to get a TAN generator for my bank account, but else, I think, I should be fine with it

At least I hope so - and my hopes are really up ;-)

But maybe I'm just too hyped at the moment...

Holy fuck, yes please!!

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 10 points 1 day ago

Same. Really looking forward to it

Will it support the el-north american bands?

[–] Vittelius@feddit.org 11 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Will the Jolla Phone work outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.?

Yes, we have designed the cellular band configuration to enable global traveling as much as possible, including e.g. roaming in the U.S. carrier networks.

[–] Quibblekrust@thelemmy.club 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

However,

Can I buy the Jolla Phone if I’m outside Europe, can I use it e.g. in the U.S.?

The initial sales markets are EU, UK, Switzerland and Norway. Entering other markets, such as the U.S. and Canada are to be decided due course based on potential interest from the areas.

We have designed the cellular band configuration to enable potential future markets, including major U.S. carrier networks.

So the same availability as the other non- apple and non-google offerings.

I guess my options to get a user respecting phone include picking one up if I vacation in Europe one day...

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Absolutely this. Roaming in America is not the same as available to people living in America.

[–] Vittelius@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago

Yes and no. "Not available" in this context means "you have to import it yourself" (paying tariffs etc.)

There is as far as I can tell no reason for it to not work with an American SIM card.

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And based on demand they're willing to make a US specific model.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And how do you get demand when you don't sell a phone there.

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Good question, in that same section it says to subscribe to show interest. But no way to show I'm interested in a US version.

I should have added their site. Thank you 💖
