The most important steps are moving the chip industry to europe, producing sensible meaningful hardware that is compatible with OSes other than Google and Microsoft, and then install proper applications on them.

Magisk twice is killing me.

I have 2 root πŸ‘Ύ

Can people use tailscale without single sign in. All the SSOs I saw were fascists corps.

It definitely supports self-hosted oicd providers like Authentik and Ophelia. If either of those are problematic I'd like to know, but they both pass the sniff test so far.

[–] Fiery@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago

Yes you can login without SSO to tailscale

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

that's true

[–] darkmogool@feddit.org 1 points 12 hours ago

Would be nice if we could…

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 9 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

De "futo"ing would be a good idea as well. Them being associated with Curtis Yarvin (literally their peer tube) who is a piece of shit close enough to elon musk and thiel.

Lou's Rossman's right to repair work is great. His ability to recognize and not associate with some of the shittiest people and groups has become legend. (Kiwi farms anyone?)

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 3 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Good to know. I just decided to try a gboard replacement and heliboard does pretty well.

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Yep, heli is what I'm using ATM. They are generally pretty solid and I haven't heard anything to recommend against the project. In fact they're completely voluntary and opt-in data collection to build their own swipe typing Library sounds like an awesome initiative and I hope they succeed with it.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Agree on heliboard. No issues here.

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Atleast its better than Gboard lol,Β

any good alternatives? I'm so bad at typing in a phone my accuracy is pretty bad, I barely use my phone and I'm always on my computer that's probably the reason.Β

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I'm using heliboard at the moment. They offer swipe typing through the Google libraries currently. But are exploring a data collection process completely voluntarily to build their own swipe typing libraries.

I did like futo's voice typing input method. It's recognition was generally right up there with Google's. Although there were certain words it frustratingly and consistently got wrong no matter how specifically I said them. But the fact that it could infer punctuation rather accurately where Google won't even try was definitely nice. Unfortunately I have not found a truly viable replacement for that sort of input yet. I definitely believe that sometime in the not-too-distant future there will absolutely be a Foss local solution. But I don't believe that futo's solution is trustworthy enough to believe that it was local Etc.

Brave is a less than ideal choice...

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Cromite is a much more secure Chromium browser. IronFox is a much more secure Gecko browser.

Yikes. De googles but leaves the brave crypto scam browser installed.

Obtainium!

They have new community-suggested install methods for difficult-to-get apps like Proton Calendar and Proton Mail. Usually, you'd only be able to get those from the Play Store. Obtainium lets you install them directly from their Github repos.

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I do use obtainium, I think I forgot to include it in the homescreen.Β

[–] skyline2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 1 day ago

An actual answer for the browser instead of just shitting on Brave would be IronFox (hardened Firefox), and the best place to get it would be the Accrescent app store.

But for real don't use Brave...

[–] LLMhater1312@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Librewolf and waterfox over brave

[–] MrSoup@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's android, Fennec for gecko or Vanadium for chromium

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
[–] MrSoup@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Gecko is the browser engine developed by Mozilla and used by Firefox.

It's better for adblockers, since Google blocked access to features used by them in chromium.
For a performance comparison check this out.
From a security point of view, Blink/Chromium got more people working on it (Google, Microsoft, community, etc.) so potential vulnerabilities get fixed faster but by being way more popular, way more vulnerabilities are found regularly and exploited in the wild.

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Im currently using cromite for chromiumΒ

Brave is a chrome based browser. There are a lot of Firefox forks (and no I dont recommend any because I dont wanna get into a fight...) you van and should use instead.

Otherwise great start /good choice!

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

How dare you not validate my decision to use Fennec/Mull/Waterfox/Iceraven/IronFox as the one true FireFox fork.

Conversely, how dare you suggest that stock Firefox/Nightly with the right add-ons is not good enough?

People these days...

Sweet! May I suggest IronFox instead of Brave? https://ironfoxoss.org/docs/installation/

It's obviously degoogled chromium so who cares, but there are all these reasons: https://thelibre.news/no-really-dont-use-brave/

Also, these are my initial impressions: https://programming.dev/post/47806969

Molly is a hardened signal fork. Not sure how folks feel about it but I have no issues.

[–] bruzzard@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Swap out Brave for Fennec (Firefox fork) to stay away from Chromium perhaps?

[–] alexquiniou@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I recommend gadget bridge if you have a smartwatch and other bluetooth objets. One app to rule them all.

https://f-droid.org/packages/nodomain.freeyourgadget.gadgetbridge

Newpipe to watch youtube without ads.

https://newpipe.net/

Voyager to surf lemmy

Good work! You should work on switching away from Proton's apps/services next, as their CEO has indicated his support for fascists, and they have repeatedly turned over VPN logs when nation-states come asking.

I use Mullvad's VPN and KeePass DX + Syncthing for passwords

I'm still not convinced that the CEOs comments conclusively prove that he's on board with the fascists, but I did find it aggravating that Proton sent emails to my gmail account saying that I had new emails from specific parties. How tf is that private?

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

yes, I don't have any money to pay for a VPN subscription for now but I am definitely switching my password manager.Β

[–] berty@feddit.org 3 points 19 hours ago

KeePass is awesome!

[–] core@leminal.space 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

One issue I've hit when de-googling is some sites/services/orgs/etc won't let me change my email. So I'm stuck with google as long as I use those sites/services/orgs.

[–] mrnobody@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can't you opt you have forgot password or forgot email, then when it goes to validate you chose I don't have access to this account?

I've changed some email this way

Get yourself a nice background to make your phone space nice!

Favourite apps from F-droid - Breezy Weather, Binary Eye, Fucks Given (Task app that is hilarious), Newpipe and Antennapod. Oh and also FeedFlow is a great RSS reader

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

thanks, I usually use a different launcher, I don't know but I kinda like it this way. its minimal and I don't use my phone much. (My desktop is. pretty dope though {arch btw})Β
