Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Oh well, fuck 'em.

Another insightful behind-the-scenes USA perspective from me:

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 4 points 16 hours ago

Yup. Like, uh, nobody saw this coming? ... Oh wait, absolutely everyone predicted it.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 14 hours ago

isnt it because of all the ICE RAIDS that have largely dropped from the msm, at least from LA because of the world cup. too late, people are already aware of it.

[–] Leviathan@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

Fuck the world Cup, fuck FIFA, fuck giving Nazis tourist dollars. At least a few people feel like their integrity is worth more than watching a game.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

World Cup hasn’t started yet idk wtf they were expecting. On top of prices and inflation being out of control people are waiting as long as possible to buy. Airfare alone is up like 200%

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 10 points 20 hours ago

They are expecting to be booked already is the issue. Reservations are not as high as they expected.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The AirBnB/VRBO owners in Seattle seem to think they hit pay dirt with the World Cup qualifier match there next month. I've had two hosts in a row claim they have 'emergency repairs' to do there that weekend (nearly two months after the day I booked) and demand that I cancel my reservation, so they can relist it at double the price.

I'm planning a birthday trip there that just happens to fall on the same day and it's been a huge pain in the ass. One of the owners even called me pretending to work for VRBO then argue with me on the phone about why I need to cancel the reservation on my end. I spoke to customer service and forced the hosts to cancel in their end, which locks them out of relisting the property during that time. The above mentioned host had to claim "the property was sold," according to my cancellation email, then presumably relist it under a new account but without any history or reviews.

Fuckin lobsters.

I mean vultures. Same thing really.

[–] AvocadoCumToast@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

Those animals at least contribute to the circle of life. These hosts are parasites. Cancerous.

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

Oh well!! Next!! Enjoy hegemonic decline wankees!

[–] reptar@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Lemmy!? Where the fuck is the "Paywall" - "here ya go" thread? Yah slacking?

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 50 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why would anyone come here? Even white tourists have been detained. God forbid a person of color come here, they may not make it home.

It’s not safe here.

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I have to go for work. Wish me luck....

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Stay safe friend! Be careful out there!

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Last time I was there, the yanks I was with saw a cockroach outside and freaked out by how big it was.

Here in Australia we call those small.

Also, it's Denver, so I'm guessing safer than most states

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

Not sure ICE has been more aggressive in liberal states. It’s a beautiful state though.!

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 4 points 1 day ago

Exactly. I've always wanted to come back to the US for another vacation, but I won't. Not with the current government.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, as an American, who in the fuck would want to come here and risk being shot by an government representative or sent to an internment camp for watching football?

[–] MisterD@lemmy.ca 1 points 19 hours ago

I heard El Salvador is nice

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 67 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Why would anyone want to travel to a fascist police state run by pedophiles? How is that fun? They’ve already said they are going to have their state sponsored terrorist police at airports looking through your phone to make sure you support the fundamentalist colonialist state of Israel and their genocide and to make sure you support king pedo and the fuck around gang or you could just go on a vacation to literally anywhere else and not have to deal with this clown show

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 23 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Given past sports washing events, people don't care about that.

It seems to be a combination of extremely high ticket prices combined with a fear that ICE is going to disappear you when you're traveling the country.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 14 hours ago

also the protest and ICE attacks on LA, likely making people stay away.

[–] Brummbaer@pawb.social 5 points 1 day ago

This is idiocracy in action. These kind of propaganda ops only work if you can stop the bad stuff you are doing for at least 5 minutes.

When the Saudi comedy festival circus was going on they didn't imprison and or kill the comedians they paid to go there. They could stop for the metaphorical 5 minutes - the current US clown show is too stupid even for that.

[–] YellowParenti@lemmy.wtf 4 points 1 day ago

Also with how fucking spread out the event is. You HAVE to use the airports, so you're forced to go through ICE. Its not just coming in and out of the country.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago

There are a lot of stupid football fans out there, but few are stupid enough to disregard their own safety.

Lifelong football fan, fuck fifa fuck the world cup. Ill be at the park volunteering soccer coaching for local youths while the fascists have their epstein files distraction cup.

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago

Good. We deserve it.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Yeah because 'murca has become a facist shithole country and no one wants to vacation in one of those.

[–] patatas@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

also OOPS! soon their country might not have jet fuel for the flight

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Why would anyone go to visit a fascist dictatorship?

[–] 8oow3291d@feddit.dk 5 points 21 hours ago

Plenty of dictatorships around the world treat foreign tourists well enough. The special thing about the US is that they seem to be happy to treat even tourists like shit. For example "German tourists’ ordeal reportedly ending as they are returned from US detention":

Jessica Brösche, a 29-year-old tattoo artist from Berlin, will reportedly join Lucas Sielaff, 25, from Bad Bibra in Saxony-Anhalt, who is reported to have returned to Germany on 6 March, after being arrested at the Mexican border on 18 February before being detained for almost two weeks.

The families of the two tourists, who were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), had compared their ordeals to “a horror film”.

I have to travel to 'Murica every few months

I'm loving the fact that the exchange rate has gotten better for me by a significant margin, that hotels are offering cheaper rates because they have rooms empty that would otherwise be full and that places are less busy with tourists

I feel for the people who didn't vote for Trump, but for those who did, and for those who could have voted against him but didn't, they can suck the farts right out of my arsehole

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 24 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Trump is a hotel owner.

Destroys tourism.

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 days ago

We're taking about someone who bankrupted four (4!) casinos. Some of them multiple times.

He might be a successful grifter (though that's probably more due to luck and being a useful and extremely easy to buy or convince puppet than any kind of talent), but a shrewd businessman he's most definitely not.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 12 points 2 days ago

My take is different.

Trump was in bed with the New York Mafia for decades. The real bosses stayed as far away from him as possible, sending their stooges to control him.

Trump had one really smart mentor, Roy Cohn. He ditched Cohn when Roy was diagnosed with AIDS.

Trump thinks that he's a genius because he does scams like selling NFTs and golden sneakers to chumps.

A real boss would have quietly extorted $50 billion out of Saudi Arabia on Inauguration Day 2017 and then just been quiet.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How could this happen tho? It's not as if the country became a shithole with a gestapo arresting and sending to concentration camps to anyone that is not a clear white straight usian...

Why would I want to risk being arrested or worse to see a soccer match? But also, why the hell would I want to give a single cent to a country that's objectively making the lives of everyone in this world worse?

[–] TBi@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

That and the tickets are absurdly expensive. So I go to the jail and go broke?

[–] Frostbeard@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (4 children)

By contrast, Airbnb has said the World Cup is to be "the biggest hosting event" in its history."

When you have an unregulated marketplace like AirBnB the legitimate businesses will loose. AirBnB rentals destroys neighborhoods and kills hotels
