Economy getting worse and these asshole franchise decides to lower the hiring range.

When my son started less then year ago he was hired at 13 an hour. Now it's 11. They been short staff and losing workers and my learned this.

Added insult to injury he is getting a promotion to Team Lead which used to pay 17 an hour now it lower to 16. He about fed up working his ass off and a promotion means little when Walmart pays more with a starting wage then where he currently works.

Fucking corporation are fucking stupid.

He needs to lower his output!

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Everything is more expensive so we will pay the most important part of the business, the employees who need the money to live, even less. This only makes sense in bizzaro land.

11$ per hour is not an okay wage in the U.S.

he was hired at 13 an hour. Now it’s 11

You mean that new people get a lower starting wage? Or that his own wage has been lowered?

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

New employee get paid the new lower wage, but when he was hired 11 months ago the starting wage was 13.

That place seems like they put in the minimum amount of work to be considered a business. I went in one near me and the vibe is just weird. Almost liminal. The walls were bare and they had one or two people working tops.

The condition of the laboring man at Walton's

[–] rf_@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

This is from 1894, nothing has changed, the systems are still in place and arguably have grown to cover a wider spread of the socioeconomic classes.

It blows my mind, for all the advances in technology, human nature hasn’t changed and we’re still exploiting our fellow people. It’s just one “fuck you” after another

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 56 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They're greedy, not stupid.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Not necessarily

People aren't eating out much anymore especially at fast food. Fast food as a business model is falling apart

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Greedy and stupid because no one applying even when they need the help and have been hiring. No one will apply at a job paying 11 when all the jobs around them are starting at 13 and higher.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Unless the existing staff break down and can't do enough work to keep the place running, management don't care.

[–] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Unless the existing staff ~~break down and can't do enough work to keep the place running~~ go on strike, management don't care.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Which will eventually happen, although who knows when.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

For reference, the highest state* minimum wage in the US is Washington State at $17.13 (in Seattle it's $21.30).

*not counting Washington DC

Wage laws across the US are all over the place. Meanwhile the federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009.

If Walmart is paying more, than it's time to go work for Walmart. As the other comment said, they're greedy, and the only way to get around this is to show them that they won't take it. They lowered the wage because they know the employees won't do anything about it.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

He plans on doing it but only after working as a Team manager for awhile. Will look good on his resume. Also he worked hard for the title. Had to take a test that apparently can use anywhere.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Walmart starts at like 21 an hour for team leads as well, at least around here. So that's not a bad idea.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

He should unionize the staff before he leaves.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

That sounds very sensible actually, and hopefully would mean earning more than he otherwise would when he moves.

I've known many people who were rejected from Walmart

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've unknew Walmart rejects too, fricken methheads

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago

Not just meth heads. If you live in a really populated area, Walmart is actually super picky.

Their HR departments are basically brainless. The computer makes all the choices

when you apply to Walmart you drop into a 3 colored queue, red yellow/orange green

  • green: worked their before no issue
  • yellow/orange: no job experience or left in bad terms not violently or a way that harmed the company
  • red: you stole something or you had massive red flags when they searched you

They're heavily pushed towards hiring greens, and if forced to, they'll hire yellows, and they're not allowed to hire reds outside of excruciating circumstances.

I had a friend who had no criminal record whatsoever, but due to someone being disabled and needing care in their household, they had never really held a job into their late 20's, The Walmart that was closest to her house wouldn't touch her with a ten-foot pole after repeated attempts, but that was in a massively populated area. However, the one that was in her old town, which was significantly lower population, called first try (but sadly that was an accidental application didn't notice the town defaulted back)

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Given the high inflation, his pay has actually been reduced $2.50, not $2.

[–] kurikai@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

why is he wirking gis arse off? ge is not being paid enough to do that. as team lead he should be encouraging the same.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah one of the most trumped up thing of our time is rising costs and lowering wages. I simply will not work to lose money. Its not a tough equation. It has to pay for food, houseing, utilities, transit, etc. If you can't so much as get a beer because your already in the red. whats the point.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm not sure there is an alternative

I would rather not be homeless

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago

What if working didnt even guarantee that?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 16 hours ago

if your working to be in the red its going to happen anyway. The only difference is how long and if you will be working while homeless.
