Hitman World of Assassination! I put off playing it because the purchase model was so fucking confusing, but now that I got it I'm having a blast! These games have some of the best level design I've ever seen, the way IOI integrates story with natural progression through the level is incredible to see. I've never seen a level like Sgail where a player must choose between either climbing the physical structure of the level, or climbing the social ladder through disguises that grant you increasing influence.

I'm on the Chongqing level, and the neon lights look absolutely gorgeous.

Unicorn Overlord.

Tried it around 2 years back and my biggest problem with it was that it was way too easy, which killed all need to engage with its tactics and squad building mechanics, which are the main mechanics of the game.

I'm now playing it on the highest difficulty with some personal restrictions. It started out pretty hard in the first couple of missions but has already become way easier by the end of the second nation. I hope that the difficulty ramps up again soon because the generic ass story certainly won't keep me going.

Replaying Rogue Trader now half the DLC is out, occasionally with my best friend as they added a coop mode at some point. RPing a reformed crime lord who has seen the light of the Imperial Truth and dedicated himself to spreading the Emperor's word while my friend goblins around with all the crim characters looting everything and occasionally triggering a fight when I'm halfway across the map.

Baldur's gate 3. Only about twenty hours in and still feel like I've got a lot to learn. Seems cool tho.

Ah damn that reminds me, I still have to finish BG3.

I've played for over 200 hours, but never made it to act 3 so far lol. Last time I got to the end of act 2, I only realised after agreeing to move to act 3 that I forgot to do a whole questline which made Halsin sad. Don't remember why I created a new character instead of loading a save though.

I feel like I'm just at the start. Never played any RPG stuff before so feel like I'm very ignorant. Survived a couple of fights tho. At this fort thingie with a bunch of those guys with horns, a bunch of pissy druids I've not met yet, and apparently they gonna get stomped by goblins. My inclination is to rob them all and run before the goblins arrive, but the character I'm playing seems to be much nicer than me so I'm talking to ppl. Prob end up helping them. Interesting game, still very early days tho and feel like I'm missing a lot

Halfway through Homura Hime. It's pretty fun albeit a little too easy for my liking on the highest difficulty.

I just started Pillars of Eternity again last night.

I'd played before up to like the big port city where you can find paladin girl, but the RTWP just wasn't clicking with me.

Now that they added turn based, I'm giving it another go with my Moon Godling Chanter. Reny Daret's ghost is a fucking beast.

Update: I know there aren't romances at all until Deadfire, but I'm already mourning the fact that I can't romance Eder. He already seduced me, Obsdian, let him have me.

I'm in what I would think is the final third or so of AI Limit, a well received anime-styled Soulslike from last year.

I'm having a hard time evaluating my time with it, because I find myself annoyed and frustrated numerous times when playing it, but this is the first Soulslike I've played in like 6 months and every time I am about to call the game bad I stop and reflect. Ambushes? Delayed attacks? Enemies with spammy attack patterns? Poison swamps? Time-wasting enemy placement? Idiotic platforming without a dedicated jump button? Aren't these all genre staples of Souls games at this point? Am I slowly discovering that this genre isn't for me anymore?

So I don't know. By all accounts the game is a competent Soulslike. Maybe I just haven't been sleeping well lately, and that's why I'm getting tilted.

The day you quit playing soulslikes is gonna be a sad day for me (╥﹏╥).

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Or maybe that is the day you branch out and discover the wonderful world of non-Souls games, eh?

But I don't know, I think I'm still under the spell of the Souls Stockholm Syndrome... for now at least. Even with my frustrations I still love exploration in Souls games, very few other games do it as well and I'm already kind of craving my next hit.

Also even then... it's not like playing non-Souls games has stopped me from posting in c/Soulslikes before so you know... you're not getting rid of me that easily.

I've dabbled. You'll be pleased to hear then that I started Withering Rooms , and even tho I haven't seen much of it yet, (Defeated the first boss and unlocked an... important area) I can say find it eerily-adorable; and it's exactly the kind of thing I crave deep within, I even like the combat! Thank you for talking about it.

Aaah, I'm so glad! God I love that game so much. I can't explain it but like I said before, exploring it gave me similar-ish vibes to exploring Dark Souls 1 the first time. Just a great experience all the way through, the only thing that could make it better is fully voiced characters, but for a solo dev with a tiny budget on his first game that is a lot to ask of course.

I might actually do another playthrough soon and try another build, just because Early Access on the sequel got pushed back to September and I am craving more.

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Somehow it works for me. Pairs well with the reading I suppose, I like imagining the voices and such.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 2 weeks ago

I don't mind it but I do love me some voice acting, it helps me get immersed. But on the flipside you could say that bad voice acting would be way worse than no voice acting, so for the budget level it was probably a wise decision.

Watching the floor get wiped with my carcass in Dragon's Dogma. In hard mode.
On the upside, in between all the retrying, i amassed 1.5 mil gold coins from just running around the map exploring and killing goblins and bandits.

This is one of those games where side quests get locked out by advancing the main story. I'm at a point where the main quest sends me right, but the side quests send me left, so I went the long way around. Now with hard mode, the exp gains are doubled from normal mode and mobs drop gold. I don't know if it's how it's supposed to work, but all the weak goblins keep dropping 10k bags. I don't mind it, because it definitely isn't enough anyway.

My defense only matters for weak mobs, in case they gank me while I'm dodging the big guys and they tend to do that, wolves especially. The big guys mostly one-shot me, so I might as well run naked around them. Might be different at higher levels, but I'm a small time explorer for now.

I'm not sure I'm going to finish the story, but for now it's fun. We'll see how it develops further on.

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Is this the original dragon's dogma? I eventually gave up on side quests because it seemed like a lot of them were slightly buggy and random. As an example, I looked up one 'questline' involving a merchant that I was trying to figure out, and it just seemed like there were so many ways to mistakenly fail it, and only one little moment to actually do it without locking it out. And then there are the escort/long-way-away-fetch-quests that just killed my enjoyment.

I still haven't beaten the main storyline. I found most of my fun was randomly encountering a big mob and fighting it. The ballistas were also great fun that I returned to a few times.

[–] lath@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, no it's Dark Arisen. I know about the merchant quest, but use outside guides because a lot of stuff is missable. Outside of gameplay, the questing is a mess and escorts are still a pain.

I mean, I was escorting a dude and a chimera showed up, so the dude went right at it just as it was spewing out poison. Like what the hell?

I enjoy the exploration, the combat, the skills and some bits of the lore. But it has some bad parts for sure.

For all its flaws, one thing I absolutely loved in that game was flinging people and goblins off cliffs and walls. So satisfying.
