I press my belly button.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I pressed the turbo button

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I'm convinced that button did nothing

[–] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It did. You used it to make your CPU slower for old timing-dependent games

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 4 points 15 hours ago (2 children)
[–] psud@aussie.zone 1 points 8 hours ago

My 386 had turbo on practically all the time except when playing earlier era games where half speed made them playable

It really was an unturbo button

[–] flying_sheep@lemmy.ml 4 points 14 hours ago

Yeah, they probably inverted it because it's weird to market a “slow” button

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

My computer was just that slow

[–] JelleWho@lemmy.world 84 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Power button? Reset button? PSU switch? Clear CMOS button?

Let's try and press them all!

[–] OddMinus1@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

I pressed my jacket button.

In case of the need to press a button but you don't know which exactly, press the belly button.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I pressed the button next to the power socket on the wall.

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 62 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's why there's a distinction between buttons and keys

Yeah I love these fuckin laptops that put the power button somewhere random in the middle of the keyboard where you might accidentally press.

I can’t imagine what goes through the mind of the genius who came up with this shit. Im guessing it was some guy who worked his way up to middle management in a Chinese manufacturing sweatshop, and then managed to sell clients on the idea that they could cut costs because he knew a quick hack to run the wires to the power supply.

[–] rambling4491@feddit.online 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

To be fair, every OS I've used comes with a confirmation screen when you press the power button. So if you press it accidentally, you can just hit "Cancel".

[–] sbeak@sopuli.xyz 2 points 20 hours ago

On KDE Plasma, pressing the power button by default shows an array of buttons for lock, sleep, hibernate, power off, and restart! Very neat I think. You can change this of course, and you can even configure it so that the behaviour changes depending on if you are plugged in, on battery, or in low power mode! I think that is really cool :0

Windows (10 and 11 at the very least) shutdowns upon pressing it

[–] sbeak@sopuli.xyz 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Windows is a bit weird sometimes. On most Linux DEs there is this functionality, and I believe MacOS also has something similar.

I do know that Windows lets you change whether the power button shuts down or makes your screen go to sleep (which doesn't kill all your programs), so you could do that.

On a related note, I hate that you need to click the small button in the start menu to restart on Windows. On Linux, typing "restart" in the search field pops up the option, making it super quick for troubleshooting and that sort. One more reason why Linux is superior to Windows I guess!

[–] rambling4491@feddit.online 1 points 16 hours ago

On Linux, typing “restart” in the search field pops up the option

That's sounds nice. Which DE can do that?

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 30 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's just shit design. Even on keyboards with Power button I've seen, they're usually distinctly shaped and coloured.

[–] Gerblat@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago

“Oh, I’ll need this info later, I better take a screenshot”

fatfingers the power button

The late comic strip User Friendly did this best back in the day. To the point that its take on it is currently the example on its Wikipedia page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Friendly

I never knew what this Sticky Key thing did. (EDIT: After months wondering, I searched for it, and turns out I should have turned it on, it's a helpful tool.)
