Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I was thinking about starting Dark Souls again since my last save got deleted. I'd probably play on PC this time around for convenience. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend. :)

I've got two tattoos and both are kinda related to soulslikes. The first one are two koi fish circling a sunflower against a backdrop of waves. While not originally intended as such, I do love Sekiro a lot, so the koi also represent the big carp in Sekiro who's just really cool.

My second tattoo is quite clearly inspired by soulslikes. It's a blue butterfly with two white lilies under and over it. The butterfly is in reference to the butterflies found in Lies of P as well as a direct nod to Sophia while the white lilies can be found in Gehrman's boss arena in Bloodborne. Love both games, so I was looking for a way to incorporate them both into one tattoo.

Do you have any Soulslike-inspired tattoos? Would you like to share if you do?

Holy shit, that shading work is absolutely incredible. Beautiful tattoo. I wont be playing any soulslikes though. Too busy coding my own little roguelite.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That sounds awesome! What is it?

[–] Muffi@programming.dev 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It is a healing roguelite (i have always enjoyed playing support). Actually just put an open beta on itch.io to get some feedback.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Awesome! I'm a support main in all the games I play, so I get that feeling. I'll see if I can give this a try, thanks for sharing and best of luck with the development!

Just started playing Elden Ring. I found some "invisible footsteps" on a beach in the west of Limgrave. Any clues on how to interact with them?

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Try catching up with whatever's making the footsteps appear and try attacking :)

[–] torubrx@piefed.social 3 points 6 days ago

I might play some DS1 or 2, but just bought dispatch and can give it a try, so not so sure.

As for tattoos, I kinda have one, the brand of sacrifice, from berserk. I'll be getting the dark sign later this year, though

DS2. Last of the Fromsoft games & I’ve no idea why it gets the grief it does. I’m loving it, even the weird stamina differences.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I was replaying it a bit this week and the loss of max life on death is just annoying. Like, dying to a pack of dogs because I was bold instead of cheesing it is not fun, and losing max health each time is just an insult. It clashes with the whole "keep going until you get it right" motif.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ugh, and I started as a cleric, which is just weak until you find the Lightning spell, so you lose to gank squads from the tiniest mistakes (aggroing more than one at a time usually).

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 3 points 1 week ago

The mace at least is a surprisingly strong weapon.

At some point they nerfed lightning, sadly. It used to have a lot more casts

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, that can be a bit frustrating. Even though it’s technically less brutal than losing Embered or Great Rune, it just feels worse. In DS3 and ER those feel like/are bonuses. In DS2 it feels more like a punishment. Human Effigies are about as or a bit more plentiful than Embers and Rune Arcs; just use them about as often as you would Embers and you should be fine. You never truly run out, but it’s a hassle to get more.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If I recall, in ds3 you get embered whenever you clear a boss. Not so in DS2. You need to co-op (which is rare now that the game is old, but even when it was new soul memory complicated it), or use a hard to farm item.

I actually never used the great runes in elden ring because I never remembered they were an option. I probably would have if you started powered up and lost it. Feels much worse that way.

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 0 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, it would be nice if in ER when you beat a Boss or at least when you beat a Remembrance Boss the game would activate your Great Rune. That would be a small but nice change.

In DS2 you don’t lose immediately 30% of your health when you die and you can mitigate that further with the Ring of Binding. The finite amount of item pick ups is also a bit higher than in DS3 (at least I think so). Enemy drops of Human Effigies are also more common. Also there is another infinite source of Effigies: you can trade Prism Stones with the Birds for them. Tedious but infinite. (You can buy infinite Stones from the cat.)

Still, I stand by what I said initially, the feeling of losing the bonus of Embered is much less bad than slowly losing your max health in Dark Souls 2. Even though it’s nice story telling through game mechanics. The Cursed One losing themselves to the curse and slowly turning more and more hollow.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 5 days ago

I think your analysis is correct, and it's kind of just basic human psychology. Humans are extremely loss-averse and losing something you feel like you had the right to (HP bar) feels worse than something framed as a bonus (embered). There are tons of psychological experiments coming to similar conclusions using money for example, where the same end outcome ends up registering completely differently for people depending on how it's framed.

[–] urno@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I was wondering what you guys were on about until you mentioned the Ring of Binding! I’m finding that i have enough Human Effigies for the time being.

[–] Blaiz0r@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Which version are you playing?

[–] urno@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Apparently the version where you need a million branches of yore, or whatever they’re called, but there are none to be found 😐 SOTFS.

[–] Blaiz0r@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 days ago

Hah Yeah that's the version I have, I'm wondering if I should do a replay through of that or buy the newest version

Just today I finished my SL1 + no lighting bonfires run of DS1. It was interesting, but the run from firelink to Nito was annoying... So probably taking a break from souls games for s bit.

I'm not a tattoo kind of person, but it is cool to see ones I recognize on other people.

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's impressive! Did you use pyromancies? With just the reinforced club I don't know how long that would take. Were the runbacks harder on the whole than the actual boss fights?

[–] IncognitoMosquito@beehaw.org 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I did Max out pyromancy but didn't end up using it much. I've played the game a... lot... lol. At a certain point the extra damage from pyro being busted doesn't matter anymore, you just have to worry about not being hit and everything else is fluff, and the weapons do good enough if you rush to upgrade them. This was actually the first time I used the reinforced club too, I usually go with the battle Axe, but i gotta say that the ref. club felt really nice. And yes the bosses were the easiest part by far. I think I had around 15 attempts running to Nito but killed him first try when I finally got there. It was a fun experience though because I got to make use of all the more niche or 'useless' shortcuts that I normally would just run past due to a nearby bonfire. Really makes you appreciate the level design in a new light.

[–] BanaramaClamcrotch@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have a Sekiro tattoo, it that counts. It’s the mortal blade hilt+some blade piercing a centipede. It’s badass!

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Yooo please show if you don't mind. That sounds amazing 🙏🏻

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't have any tattoos at all. And honestly, if I were to get one it would probably not be Soulslike-inspired. When I was young and pretentious I did want to get Rimbaud's poem Départ tattooed somewhere, but these days honestly I'm kinda glad I didn't. I don't think I lived up to all that. I do still resonate with it though.

No Soulslikes for me right now. I tried doing some runs in the roguelike mode of AI Limit but I ran into the first new DLC boss and just uninstalled the game instead. The game is fine but I just wasn't really having fun with it. I can't really tell if the game has some annoying designs or if I'm just not into Soulslikes anymore, it's been like 6 months since the last Soulslike I played.

Anyway instead I finally finished up Rise of the Ronin. I burned out on the open world some months back so it was good to finally see the credits and be able to free up some disk space. Next up on Backlog Cleanup is getting around to finishing Ninja Gaiden 4.

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

No soulslikes, no videogames this week really. Not in the right headspace at all.

Funny coincidence, I don't have any soulslike tattoos yet but a friend of mine is an apprentice and gifted me a tattoo recently, and we are gonna do some caryll runes of course, as a chest piece probably. It's only fitting. <3

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I know that feeling. Hope you can find the energy sometime soon.

Cool! Which ones? There's two I'd stay away from D:

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm still undecided :P I'm trying to come.up with a cool composition, but hunter at the center of course.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Would you want to draw it yourself or will you let someone else work their vision?

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

It's going to be pretty minimalistic so I'll tackle it myself :P

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I finally got Overture for Lies of P, so I'll be playing Lies of P again.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Once again, have fun with Overture!

Depending on the detail and size you're going for, that might actually be affordable. Where would you get that tattooed?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I was about to say "oh just somewhere local" but then I realized you meant where on my body lol

I'd just have it on my upper arm so it can be covered by ny shirt sleeve.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

xd

Makes sense. Depending on profession, it's good if you can cover it up

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I do not have any tattoos period much less a Souls inspired one. I think about getting a tattoo every 3 or so years and then am like 'nah that sound like too much of a hassle'. Maybe if I'm thinking about it next time, I would think about a Souls inspired one? What would I even get? Okay, an Erdtree inspired one sounds pretty cool… But that would have to be kinda big…?

@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip, your tattoos sound pretty amazing. How are the lilies oriented in your second tattoo? With the butterfly vertically between them are the flowers open towards the butterfly or are they stack on top? (I'm trying to visualize the tattoo)

Where is the Ornstein tattoo from? That looks really good! Works especially well on a shoulder.

No Soulslikes for me this week and but next weekend at the latest I'm gonna play another Souls game. Currently on the tail end of my Slay the Spire 2 obsession. I'm trying to get with Regent to Ascension Level 10 and then I'm gonna pause. (I'm currently on Level 9, having beaten 8)

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I was thinking about getting Yggdrasil tattooed on my left calf - that would lend itself quite well for the verticality of a tree, I imagine. Forearm as well, of course, but you'd be showing your tattoo to the world with little possibility of covering it up unless you're wearing long sleeves. If that's what you want, tho, all the better. Upper arm maybe too.

Why tell if I can just show (my phone camera sucks a little, so bear with me):

I've got three gripes with the butterfly tattoo, maybe a little too nitpicky. Can you tell what it is?

Holy shit, you've gotten quite far! How do you like the Regent up until now? Have you figured him out?

Also, are you playing on live or in the beta branch?

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I really like those. I understand some of your nitpicks from below but they don't really bother me. Though I guess maybe it would be different if I was looking at them all day, hah. But regardless, as compositions I think they look great!

[–] GrantUsEyes@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lovely tattoos, I had caught a peek of them in some pics you shared before and was intrigued. I'm also thinking about a sekiro inspired one if I manage to 100% the game

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Thanks :) Imagine a Corrupted Monk tattoo - that would go hard

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh, those tattoos really look nice :)

The koi around the sunflower work really well. I know of a similar design where the koi circle the ying-yang symbol. In the abstract a sunflower sounded kinda strange, but that works visually really well!

The large butterfly on the arm with the lilies looks fantastic! The way the butterfly flies up the arm and the wings envelop the arm, pretty cool. What you don't like about, it I can't tell… I don't really know that much about tattoos tbh. Maybe the background the black symbols makes it a bit to busy? But it provides nice symmetry with the other arm.

Many locations for a tree tattoo. I really should think about it some more. Thanks for the advice!

Oh yeah, Regent totally clicked for me. I wouldn't say I have him quite figured out, but at each card pick up I have a good idea what to take and why. Also Regent works quite well with a large deck, since you mostly invest in the Sovereign Blade one way or another, which is good for me since I tend to pick up to many cards.

I'm playing on live and not on beta. At first because of stability and because I didn't see a reason to play on the beta branch of an early access game. Now it's because I read the changes and think that Regent is a bit stronger on live than on beta, at least how I play him. The biggest difference is probably the removal of Doormaker. Doormaker gets absolutely destroyed by Regent, for him it's by far the easiest Act 3 boss imho.

What's you character with the highest level? Are you playing on live or beta? Also have you heard about the multiple review bombings of StS2 (so stupid)?

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ty :)

It's definitely a unique arrangement. My tattooist was also surprised to get such a request but liked it a lot.

The background is a good point. It kinda looks like machine cogs, so it fits Lies of P. But I kinda got talked into using that as a background because I didn't have any other suggestions and just went along with it. The second thing I noticed specifically about that pattern is that if you just focus on the white lines between black dots, the patterns look like swastikas 😭 I have to really focus on it, but when I do notice, it annoys me so much. And the third thing is that the way the butterfly is shown is not nature-like. All depictions of butterflies show them this way: wings spread wide apart with their bodies in the middle comparatively lower than the wings themselves. But the only time you actually see butterflies that way is when they're taxidermied 🥲

I still love the tattoo, and no one I show it thinks it looks bad or anything. Probably natural to have a couple things to nitpick about a tattoo.

Sounds good! A feeling for what cards accomplish is good to develop.

I play on beta because I like to see all the new changes implemented since the game is updated quite regularly. I'll play on live when the game is fully out - until then, I want to see what the devs cook up :)

Still Defect on A8 I think. I haven't played too much recently. And yea, I've heard about the Chinese players having a crash out because of some changes. They specifically bought into an early access game - of course it's gonna be changed :D

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

Okay… when I squint really hard it kinda looks like that… maybe. But none would say that when they just see it on your arm.

I actually think that the way the butterfly wraps around the curve of the arm mitigates the taxidermied look and makes it look more natural, imho.

Still fantastic tattoos. Even more so now that I didn’t look so much at them as individual tattoos on two arms but a combined look.

Yeah, StS2 is still super fun. Everything before A9 was kinda manageable especially for Regent, but the more damage of A9 kinda throws of my gameplay feel.

As stupid as it was for the Chinese players to crash out and mass downvote for slight balance changes in the beta branch of an early access game (the feedback button is right there…), what happened later was even more stupid: some idiot people found Anita Sarkeesian credited as a consultant in the credits and lost their minds. I mean the Gamergate harassment campaign was l over a decade ago… And some sad individuals just wanna continue to harass… The Chinese players at least played the game, but some nitwits who don’t even play the game have now mass downvoted.
