you can reply to anything like this with "capitalism makes you subscribe to a toothbrush"

[–] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I remember being in a group chat and, when I was the literal only person praising communism and socialism, some random asshole outright told me that under socialism, you could easily kidnap hundreds of children. They didn't provide any sources, any examples, anything about which specific socialist countries were doing this or when, literally nothing besides a bombastic, inflammatory interjection of the most obscene anticommunist drivel.

I was getting dogpiled in that group chat for supporting communism so I wasn't feeling up to challenging this person in the moment, but it really stuck with me how much nonsense the average person has internalized regarding communism and socialist states.

was the person in question from latam per chance? their claims strongly remind me of cia propaganda during operation peter pan.

though the whole "commies are gonna take away your kids" lie has been propagated by reactionaries and their sponsors as early as the russian civil war.

[–] SmithrunHills@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

They were Southeast Asian, actually. The group chat was basically full of neo nazis(one of them was even a polish femboy who was unfortunately my first exposure to a lot of nazi dogwhistles) and liberals who were decent on social issues but were vehemently anti-communist, with most of us being from SEA.

[–] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago

hmm, i suppose that tracks too. the lie about communists kidnapping children was also spread by people such as tom a. dooley, various western missionaries, and other agents of the cia, dgse, and mi6 throughout south-east asia. reactionaries, as a rule, aren't particularly inventive and often repeat the same propaganda stories over and over.

the polish nazi femboy is unfortunately no surprise either. since the 1990s, the usual circles have devoted enormous resources to the nazification of eastern europe's youth and counterculture, including queer culture.

Thanks for sharing, I was unaware of these events

It’s a joke?

Damn, guess I’m not a commie after all.

supreme

[–] BonsaiBoo@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

No one OWNS a joke in communism

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

I mean, can anyone really 'own' a toothbrush. They have minds and souls of their own. I think we should let toothbrushes be free

[–] Midnight_Pearl@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

however uninformed you think right wingers are, they're infinitely more uninformed than that. never underestimate how absurd their conception of everything is.

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You will share your toothbrush with me and you will like it 😠

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 7 points 4 weeks ago

Our oral microbiome, comrade

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Under communism do we also share condom? I have so many questions about this worldview

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

Yes the state makes one condom per year and you have to get on a wait-list to use it

always practice safe sex, even if you're alone

[–] LaBellaLotta@hexbear.net 18 points 4 weeks ago

I’m gonna be pissed if I still have to brush my teeth under communism

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This argument gets worse and worse by the minute looking at how much we can actually “own” under capitalism.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

Under capitalism the only thing you can own is the libs

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yeah, soon enough we'll have to pay a subscription fee to use a toothbrush.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

if you buy an electric one it sure feels that way with how quickly they wear out and then you gotta buy the replacement heads that fit

From what I understand Marxism makes no active distinction between personal and private property. It's just that toothbrushes and other personal items aren't considered "property" in the first place.

They're not relevant to our understanding of property nor the economic relations we want to change. Have your toothbrush. It's fine.

The distinguishing feature of Communism is not the abolition of property generally, but the abolition of bourgeois property. But modern bourgeois private property is the final and most complete expression of the system of producing and appropriating products, that is based on class antagonisms, on the exploitation of the many by the few.

In this sense, the theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property.

We Communists have been reproached with the desire of abolishing the right of personally acquiring property as the fruit of a man’s own labour, which property is alleged to be the groundwork of all personal freedom, activity and independence.

Hard-won, self-acquired, self-earned property! Do you mean the property of petty artisan and of the small peasant, a form of property that preceded the bourgeois form? There is no need to abolish that; the development of industry has to a great extent already destroyed it, and is still destroying it daily.

Or do you mean the modern bourgeois private property?

But does wage-labour create any property for the labourer? Not a bit. It creates capital, i.e., that kind of property which exploits wage-labour, and which cannot increase except upon condition of begetting a new supply of wage-labour for fresh exploitation. Property, in its present form, is based on the antagonism of capital and wage labour. Let us examine both sides of this antagonism.

To be a capitalist, is to have not only a purely personal, but a social status in production. Capital is a collective product, and only by the united action of many members, nay, in the last resort, only by the united action of all members of society, can it be set in motion. Capital is therefore not only personal; it is a social power. When, therefore, capital is converted into common property, into the property of all members of society, personal property is not thereby transformed into social property. It is only the social character of the property that is changed. It loses its class character.

You all aren't collectivizing your toothbrushes?!? And i thought i was in a community of real communists, not liberals pathetic

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

What else am I supposed to use to clean the grout on the bathroom floor if not "your" toothbrush?

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I was told this as a child.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 10 points 4 weeks ago

For some reason, in former communist countries, toothbrush ownership is over 90%, while in Western Bloc countries, toothbrush ownership is stagnant around 50-60%.

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 9 points 4 weeks ago

How could communism even build a toothbrush without a price signal?

[–] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 9 points 4 weeks ago

ive had someone tell me this unironically as well and my response was that communism wasnt coming for anyone's toothbrush except for that specific person. their toothbrush and only theirs will be communal

[–] mayakovsky@hexbear.net 8 points 4 weeks ago

Communism is coming for your toothbrush (factory)

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

It's true though?
