Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

AI bros spreading their opinions far and wide.

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's the second time I've seen this image. Is it a based on actual medieval tapestry or someone just made it in that style

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Why do I feel like that's a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

[–] wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because that's absolutely something they do in MP&tHG. That exact joke, just without the AI reference. They use it in the interlude between certain scenes.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I knew I've seen it somewhere.

It was also an actual thing in mediaeval manuscripts.

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 61 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm gonna need that last panel... for science.

[–] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 26 points 2 weeks ago

That's the spirit!

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 51 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

As a side note, I'm also a little sick of hearing people use the term 'Luddite' without any knowledge of the historical context.

[–] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Clearly Luddite means anyone I disagree with, right?

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 20 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

That’s β€œwoke”

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works -3 points 2 weeks ago

Everybody whining about this Project 2025 thing is just calling everyone they disagree with Nazis

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The Luddites were the stupid ones who simply lashed out because they didnt understand the new tech.

Tap for spoiler/s just in case

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

You sure about that? Sounds like some righteous motivation and then the owner class writing the history they wanted remembered after the fact by trying to have the term adopted in wealthy-owned media as simply those "afraid of any new technology"

"TheΒ LudditesΒ were members of a 19th-century movement of EnglishΒ textileΒ workers who protested the use of certain types of automated machinery due to concerns relating to worker pay, child labor, working conditions and output quality. They often destroyed the machines in organised raids. Members of the group referred to themselves as Luddites, self-described followers of "Ned Ludd", a legendary weaver whose name was used as a pseudonym in threatening letters to mill owners and government officials."

That's just the Wikipedia intro, I'm sure plenty here with more depth to add.

Drawing is fun. There's something really fulfilling about taking an image or idea from your imagination and turning it into a physical reality in front of you. It's a hobby humans have had since we first became humans, and I'm not about to let some machine take that away from me. I don't care if it takes me minutes or weeks, the effort is what makes the piece mine. There's no substitute for that satisfaction.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

It's also pretty dang cool to be able to literally show people what you're thinking, to manifest dreams into physical reality. Being an actual artist gives you the power to do that.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

100%. Sometimes words simply can't cut it, and there's no way an AI can capture the exact perspective I'd like to convey. I got into art as a way to communicate the way I see things, which seems to be different from how many people do. I love having a way to express abstract concepts, from the warmth I feel when drinking coffee, to the cloudiness that fills my brain when I'm overwhelmed. People resonate with the human commonality behind it all, and I've found that making visual representations can go a long way in helping others understand my mind.

No AI can do that. The thought of adding an extra middleman that can't comprehend the assignment, and having to waste time prompting and re-prompting because of it, sounds like a great way to end up giving up in frustration.

Oh, and Happy Cake Day!

10000%

And thanks! Feels good to still be free of Reddit.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

If anything, porn is what generative AI excels at. You could generate that image locally since the first models came out. Now? The parents could have tentacles even if you wanted while turning into furries. All in disturbingly realistic detail if further trained.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

AI-bro is right in one thing though, drawing does take time
and yet the artist was able to produce a drawing of them fornicating with the parents in mere moments...

Was the interaction premeditated, or is that just what they like to draw?

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

prior to AI some people traced over real art or just ran it through a copy machine could also claim they saved time but they are still incapable without the real artist coming up with the art in the first place to copy from, cannot claim it as their creation, still cannot teach how to create art and will never experience the pleasure, therapy, effort or skill that changes the brain as it learns from creating the art.

but hey : they saved themselves some time.

they might also save time not being born to experience life if it is that much of a bother for them

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Sure, but there isn't any art out there of you having sex with my parents (i hope) for you to trace or otherwise copy, so if I just met you and you whipped out a drawing of just that without a moments delay, i would probably call the police and request a restraining order between you and my parents

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This may set the groundwork for an uncomfortable discussion of your parents' personal life these days.

[Said, obviously, not knowing the condition of your parents]

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I would be surprised if they partook in a twosome, let alone a threesome, and that goes for both drawn and physical forms of the activity

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They are consenting adults.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The drawn representations of my parents consented to it, or my actual biological parents consented to it?

Does it matter? What rights does one have to ones likeness when in drawn form? πŸ€”

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wait, so he says that AI can't generate obscene things because of all the filters but then fails to publish an obscene drawing himself? Is that really a win?

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I say it is,because the point wasn't really your chance to jerk off...

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If someone made a disturbing deep fake of someone to prove a point then they'd rightly be condemned for their disgusting behavior.

Making an image sexualizing someone without there consent is wrong, no matter if you use AI or draw it yourself.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It appears his only objection was a lack of credits.

I think the consent should come from the parents-

Looks like someone got ragebaited!
