Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources donโ€™t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politicsยฉ Brought to You by Mountain Dewโ„ข is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

The liberal mind cares nothing for human life. Merely for building ornate decadent monuments to itself. The liberal desires nothing more than to be reduced to be an exhibit in a museum of a long-dead civilization.

Their alternative is recognising that the US isn't the great benevolent power that they imagine it is, so this is their only option.

Why don't they add salt, seawater is less prone to algae

[โ€“] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 8 points 6 hours ago

Who's fighting in that shitshow again?

Im surprised they aren't just pumping it full of copper. It's blue, it kills algae, and the president doesnt need to follow EPA regs on pesticides.

Sure, the outflow would lead to oxygen depletion and a fishkill in the potamac, but thats for the woke to cry about

[โ€“] mar_k@hexbear.net 22 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

They're just dumping bleach/ hydrogen peroxide in it rn

[โ€“] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 14 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

peroxide is toxic to all life at high concentrations. But all life has enzymes to deal with it, and it decomposes to water and oxygen. Weak shit. Algae laughs at the pathetic attempt at control. Copper-based pesticides on the other hand are no joke to algae (and it eventually ends up in the sediment, persisting in the environment forever).

[โ€“] mar_k@hexbear.net 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That'd make it more light turquoise blue color tho right? Trump wanted it "American flag blue"

Atp they should just fill it with some industrial petroleum dye that'll mutate the ducks

[โ€“] doubtingtammy@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 hours ago

I cant find pics, but copper pesticides are a deep blue color (because of the oxidation state of the copper). At least thats how it looks when you mix it before applying. You never use enough to actually color the body of water, and you're right it probably turns more greenish after being applied.

fill it with some industrial petroleum dye thatโ€™ll mutate the ducks

Methylene blue lets gooooo! Put me in the situation room ill find a solution to this

I support the algae in their war against carbon dioxide and the American empire.

[โ€“] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 22 points 9 hours ago

they should make it the world's biggest ball pit

That's a lovely green.

I like the idea someone had here. drain it, fill it with a clear blue resin. done!

[โ€“] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 9 points 4 hours ago

Libs would go insane. DC stuff like a reflecting pool is very important to them.

[โ€“] supdawg813@hexbear.net 12 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Aesthetics of solids vs flowing liquids aside, resin just doesn't hold up very well under constant UV light. I don't want to know what it would cost just to tear it up, nevermind replace it when that happens. Unless there's some super resin I dont know about.

Other considerations:

  • a million particles would get trapped in the resin before it cures.
  • resin heats as it cures which could do massive damage to the basin at such large volumes.
  • that amount of resin would be a nightmare to mix/pour evenly and cure quality would be highly dependent on weather. You'd probably have to do it in layers, which just creates more opportunity for debris to get trapped inside.
  • wear and tear. I bet you would have all sorts of people and wildlife walking around on it and scratching it up.
  • stains from said people and wildlife.
  • yellowing and clouding over time, which will make it not so reflective plus plastics in general are a bitch and a half to buff/polish

...honestly you'd be far better off filling it with polished concrete or stone. Just commit to the bit at that point. You can even dye it.

[โ€“] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 9 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

At least it would solve the problem of the pool leaking

[โ€“] supdawg813@hexbear.net 10 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

That reminds me, let's not talk about the water that would collect on top lol

[โ€“] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 hours ago

That reminds me, letโ€™s not talk about the water that would collect on top lol

A nice ingredient in the "pool" of climate change and tropical insects reproducing in the has been colder places and populations without antibodies.

[โ€“] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Either you fill it to the fill line in which case the water flows off. Or you fill it to the brim.

[โ€“] supdawg813@hexbear.net 8 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe? Only if the surface is sloped to the sides and otherwise perfectly flat. And this is a vast surface to have the resin set like that, if such a thing is even possible without some shaping and polishing after it cures.

I've pivoted to recommending mercury

[โ€“] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 49 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Pouring thousands of gallons of epoxy to simulate water would be incredibly American.

[โ€“] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 23 points 9 hours ago

Things being done "for the public" getting thwarted by lack of regulations on growth: how very Amerikkkan

[โ€“] Chana@hexbear.net 17 points 9 hours ago

No one could have predicted this!

[โ€“] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 26 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Wow Trump gone woke, even making the reflecting pool green. America truly has fallen

[โ€“] regul@hexbear.net 20 points 9 hours ago
