Rules

The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World's rules. You can click the link but we've reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn't a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.

1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.

A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn't rulebreaking and we can't be supportive to them then we probably shouldn't engage.

B. No illegal content.

C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.

D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.

E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.

2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/community@instance.com)

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't

You should also include either:

!community@instance.com

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

MODERATORS

!chess@feddit.org feddit.org/c/Chess

The existing chess community on lemmy.ml/c/chess seems to be dead, moderators are not reachable and is hosted on .ml which is defederated by many instances. Use this community for anything related to chess: news, memes, puzzles, guides, etc.

There is also the recent !woodpushers@quokk.au.

There are not enough active users on Lemmy/Piefed, there is obviously even less so that are playing chess. I'm not sure creating a new instance will solve that issue (I just joined, though ;)

[–] Drukob@feddit.org 17 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Good to know, thanks. I do think having an obvious name is important when trying to grow a community, I have never heard of woodpusher before as a term for chess, so idk. But I'll subscribe and check it out. I agree that the number of users is pretty low, so the chance of this failing is pretty high, but just wanted to try anyway :) Also the anarchy chess community at !anarchychess@sopuli.xyz does have over 6k subscribers and is at least a little bit active, so there should be some users around

It is probably not the name I would have picked myself (even though I qualify for it) , but it's a classic, kinda ;)

[–] birne@feddit.org 3 points 4 weeks ago

You don't have to check out the woodpusher community, there won't be anything for you to see there. quokk.au defederated feddit.org a while ago.

The existing chess community on lemmy.ml/c/chess seems to be dead

it looks like !chess@lemmy.ml is averaging a few posts per month this year and has 2.4k subscribers; not very active but i wouldn't call it dead.

moderators are not reachable

the mods do seem inactive; i and other lemmy.ml admins remove spam if/when it gets reported (which has happened four times this year). if someone (with some posting history) wants to be added as a mod of it just let me know and i'll add you.

and is hosted on .ml which is defederated by many instances

huh? which instances have defederated lemmy.ml?

[–] artwork@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (3 children)

Marvelous! Though, just to clarify, why the lemmy.ml is frequently considered not preferred? For years I see that the instance is mentioned alongside?: "mistrusted", "discredited", "unstable" etc.

Have you considered another of the most popular as lemmy.world? If you did, why did you choose Feddit, if I may ask?

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 16 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (3 children)

On a very high level, it is typically heavily auth-left influenced (so pro-China, pro-Russia, anti "western"). In my opinion, many of its communities are also heavily protected to ensure opposing views are removed by aggressive moderation.

This led to a few larger instances blocking it (.world I think is the kargst to have done so) blocking it, so their users cannot access *.ml communities.

**Edit: as many have pointed out, my brain isn't firing on all cylinders today... Hexbear was the instance it defederated from, not .ml... Sorry for the false info!

Huh? Lemmy.world has not blocked lemmy.ml, nor have (correct me if i'm wrong?) any other large instances.

Here is this very comment from me (on lemmy.ml) viewable on lemmy.world, btw.

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for pointing it out, was confusing it with hexbear

[–] antonim@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

.ml isn't blocked on .world

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah edited now to point that out, was confusing it with hexbear

[–] artwork@lemmy.world 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Roger that. Thank you for the details! It matches when I got banned from !privacy@lemmy.ml, too, for the following single message:

And I never got the actual reason, where I pointed to actual information and viewed the case from accountable attitude.
I do indeed find some of the moderators of lemmy.dbzer0.com and lemmy.ml utterly inadequate, unfortunately...

Regardless, there are Communities on the main LemmyWorld feed page from that instance, so they probably didn't block it, and I appreciate that heartfelt... since I do not get why block whole instances with so diverse Communities, where a single post by so infinitely unique and ineffably magnificent people may be of interest of someone else, where both have no idea nor care about these politics, ideology, agitations etc. but just try discovering and contributing whenever and however they can.

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

And I never got the actual reason

imo the reason is pretty clear in the modlog you're linking to. i agree that ban duration was disproportionate though so i just lifted it. please do not advocate for the use of telegram in !privacy@lemmy.ml though, lmao

[–] artwork@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Thank you very much, dear @cypherpunks@lemmy.ml ! Though, I am not sure I will ever participate in the Community, since I am afraid to be banned for a single message posted all of a sudden for years, in the unforeseen future. There's no trust in the effort and time I would invest there anymore, I am sorry.

Meanwhile, may I ask why do you stand against Telegram as a secure and optimal solution for the majority?
Just to clarify, are you aware Telegram is blocked in Russia by the government, mostly because the former does not want to share data with the government standing for the privacy, if I am not mistaken?

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 0 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

This is offtopic here, but here is an answer 🙄 (click to expand)

why do you stand against Telegram as a secure and optimal solution for the majority

Because it isn't secure. It is marketed as being secure, and it is not. It is snake oil.

Just to clarify, are you aware Telegram is blocked in Russia by the government

yes, i am aware that they are (again) currently blocked. i'm curious your theory for why they were unblocked after the previous blocks? (note: please don't actually reply to this question here; see end of this comment first)

mostly because the former does not want to share data with the government standing for the privacy, if I am not mistaken?

yes, you are mistaken.

Russia has strengthened and later weakened their restrictions on Telegram various times over the years for reasons which are probably unknowable without insider information. What is clear is that Telegram is absolutely sharing data (which they've chosen to design their service such that they can have access to) with various governments at various times; assuming that they never would share any with Russia is nonsensical. The extent to which they willingly share which data with which governments, versus which governments access data without their cooperation (by compromising their servers or coercing their engineers, which gives access to message contents due to their lack of e2ee) is not particularly interesting.

Beyond that, I recommend that you post on !nostupidquestions@lemmy.world or somewhere similar if you need people to explain why telegram is offtopic in communities about privacy technology. (This discussion is very offtopic in this thread so I won't reply further here. If you really feel the need to argue about the above I recommend you do it in a new thread somewhere it isn't offtopic; if you tag me maybe i'll reply there.)

[–] artwork@lemmy.world 1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Roger that. Thank you! See, there's a difference. I stated actual links to my statements to for what I got banned. You provided none, and I won't consider them.

Regardless, perhaps someone else will find the Communities you shared, or "off-topic" mentioned several times relevant and useful, since I didn't, sorry, being on Lemmy for 4 years now with more than 2 decades on IRC since UnderNet, OFTC, Freenode (now Libera) etc. where I got some social online interaction experience, and where actual specialists could back me up pointing to actual evidence.

Please do consider clarifying at #security on Libera IRC if you ever interested in discussing the security and optimizations of Telegram, including their great ideas as TGS format in 2015-01-02 similar to Lottie (2015-02).

Since, at this point, it feels like you haven't done a more in-depth research of their encryption backed by public bounties. Unless, you know more than I do, and if so, please do share actual references in addition to the one I did in the message I got banned that stated possible issues with their algorithms back then:

And, it's worth to mention that the moderators at the Community you referenced do delete questions even if those are "not stupid".
Please check the following: https://lemmy.world/comment/24262211 (Yet, their question, and my answer with others’ answers, were just deleted...)

[–] Drukob@feddit.org 11 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I simply chose feddit.org, because it is my home instance and I am very happy with how it is being maintained and taken care for (i.e. see https://feddit.org/post/25348485 or https://feddit.org/post/5050805). It is operated by a non-profit organization (https://fediverse.foundation/) and Lemmy.world already seems like the biggest instance, so in the spirit of decentralization I think it makes sense to spread the content out a little.

Not too sure about lemmy.ml, I know the political views of some of the admin are at least questionable and in general it seems quite political, which I don't really need for a chess community

[–] artwork@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Got it. Thank you for the careful and responsible attitude towards the so ineffably marvelous art of human pursuit for brilliance and mental discipline!

[–] Transform2942@lemmy.ml -1 points 4 weeks ago

.ml has extremely low tolerance for Western racism and propaganda and this upsets westerners greatly

[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago

I like watching and following chess but I really suck at playing. I get schooled so easily. I also feel too old to learn :P

Maybe I'll post all the weird chess things I watch on the side.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 4 weeks ago

Just use chessanarchy

[–] CrypticCoffee@lemmy.ml 0 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

Ml will usually consider fresh moderation requests on unmodded communities. It can probably be recovered. You can always redirect users to active sub if not.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io -1 points 4 weeks ago

Chess is a game of conquest pushed by imperialists seeking hegemony. But also, there is often promotion of pawns late in the game, and it was big in the USSR.

Therefore, chess may be discussed, but only after the workers have finished their labor for the good of the state.
