The USB dongle is plugged in. Does this override Bluetooth settings in options? If yes, is it possible to truly turn off Bluetooth connectivity and how would you test that, since the Bluetooth setting itself is toggled off? If not, how is it doing this?

Trying to search for the answer via search engine just gives me troubleshooting to make the mouse connect, which is the opposite of my question.

The dongle itself connects to the mouse. As far as the computer is concerned, your mouse is plugged in (via the dongle)

If it were connected over bluetooth, you wouldnt need the dongle. Youd just pair the mouse to the pc directly.

Odds are the dongle is just using a standard 2.4ghz connection to the mouse like wifi/Bluetooth, but that doesnt matter for your question.

I didn't know it worked like that. I think I understand now, thank you.

This is most likely. I have a wireless mouse which has an option to switch between direct 2.4GHz connection to a dongle and Bluetooth. I use the latter when on my laptop, but the former when on desktop PC.

The dongle's not overriding anything. You're just bluetoothing to that, not the computer, and from there it gives windows the mouse signals via USB.

If you're using the dongle that came with the mouse, that's a proprietary wireless connection made between the mouse and the dongle. The device your computer sees is the dongle, which is connected to the computer via physical USB connection. It doesn't use the computer's Bluetooth radio, so turning off Bluetooth doesn't affect it.

If you want to test if your computer's Bluetooth is truly off, you can probably find a Bluetooth device sniffing app and see if it detects your computer when you've disabled it, but I don't know of one to suggest. You can pretty well trust that if you've turned it off in software, it's off.

The dongle likely used RF, not bluetooth. The computer just reads from the dongle as if it were a wired USB connection.

My mouse has dual modes, so I can connect with the dongle or via bluetooth. I use the dongle because I generally hate bluetooth and keep it disabled, and also because you get higher polling rates over RF than you do with bluetooth.

Also, why are you using windows?

On your motherboard there is a bluetooth radio. That is what is being turned off and on by turning bluetooth off and on.

The USB receiver is likely not bluetooth but a 2.4GHz radio for connecting to the mouse.

Your mouse may also be able to connect via Bluetooth without the USB dongle, some mice can do that, but most just use their dongle.

Bluetooth is not great for low latency things like mouse input or game controllers. It also kind of sucks for audio but that is handled mostly by just buffering audio and having a slight delay in playback. That said, I love Bluetooth because I can have headphones without cables that get snagged all the time. Very handy.

Is it just a Bluetooth dongle or a proprietary one that came with your mouse, such as with Logitech stuff? The proprietary ones usually work on their own stack or have a secondary RF connection that it uses when BT fails. As long as the dongle is plugged in, they will just work.

Think about it for a second. Why are you plugging the dongle in?

Rarely these days do you find a real Bluetooth only mouse. Many are multi mode. Frequently you will see tri-mode rechargeable mice, wired direct use plus recharge, fast refresh 2.4ghz gaming dongle, and bluetooth for travel with a laptop.

I've always assumed the expect the dongle on a gaming desktop and Bluetooth with a laptop as laptops usually have dual mode WiFi cards, but many desktops come with WiFi now also.

I don't know what mouse you are using but my Logitech mouse has both the dongle and Bluetooth connectivity. The dongle is straight up connected as long as its plugged in.

I was coming to say this. Say hi to Electra and Demeter for me!

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 days ago

It's going over my head

[–] Shimitar@downonthestreet.eu 4 points 6 days ago

It's a dual mouse. If it was using bt you can unplug the dongle. If you plug and use the dongle, then the mouse is not using bt or at least not the bt of the PC....

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

The mouse and the dongle are two teenagers, and that parent PC does not know exactly what they are doing together 😇

Pretty sure it isn't even Bluetooth at all, but another kind of radio, because Bluetooth isn't the fastest for mice.

It's Windows 11, nothing is really ever off.

Pavan Davuluri did you downvote that, it was but a quip.
