Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I wonder why the softbank goose hadn't broken out of mastodon yet. It's been over 3 days.

I'll fill that in: Geese wouldn't have to be around humans so much if humans didn't turn untold millions of square miles of natural habitat into a sea of asphalt and concrete for their stupid vroom vroom boxes.

I took it as "geese are perfect and need to additional explanation".

Owls are thought to be wise because of their association with Athena and having dramatic eyes, but they have small brains and are not particularly smart compared to other birds.

Geese are BLOODTHIRSTY

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 19 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Owls are not wise. They're idiots, almost the entire skull cavity is just made of eyeballs, that's very little left over for the brain.

[–] Yaky@slrpnk.net 13 points 6 days ago

IIRC from an ornithologist talk, owls have such good evolutionary advantages (eyesight, hearing, silent flight), they don't have to be "intelligent". The rest of the raptors are generally considered more "intelligent" for seeking, stalking, and catching prey.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

and the earholes

but bird brains are small and dense so they're still smart anyway

A sign I found IRL. Last time I checked, geese can’t read, so I’m not sure what the point of it is.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 6 days ago

Maybe to discourage people from introducing invasive species in that particular area?

Or it's a sign for that ONE guy in the neighborhood who insists on taking his obnoxious goose with him everywhere?

Or maybe it's a Scarfolk type thing?

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Geese make excellent watch animals and can fight off predators as large as coyotes, plus they are hardier and more self-sufficient than most other livestock birds, and finally much of their diet is grass (meaning they require substantially less supplementary feed).

This is goose slander. Also it's spelled "squirrel."

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

it's spelled "squirrel"

Maybe it's spelled in a British accent? 😁

One of my favorite things when listening to audiobooks is when the narrator has impeccable dignified RP diction and then suddenly the word "squirrel" arrives to cause hilarious auditory chaos 😄

Even better when the narrator has a Scottish accent!

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Squir-elles are just French female squirrels.

I love how geese swim around on the water pretending to be swans

"Look at me I'm a swan, look at me swanning"

Wanker birds

Deer kill the most people of any wild animal in North America. They'll just brain you with a hoof.

Never had a problem with a goose. Deer on the other hand are vile vermin who suck the life out of gardens and countryside.

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I have a buddy who's a forest ecologist, he loves nature and all of its creatures....... except for deer. If you get the right amount of booze in him he will go on like an hour long rant about how it should be everyone's civic duty to shoot deer in the face on site.

Apparently native Americans spent centuries reshaping all the forest in America to become giant deer factories to sustain the large population of pre colonial America. These deer factories are still making deer printers go brrr noises even after the great dying of the native population. And the European settlers who replaced them spent their extinction level effort on hunting everything else.

So now the deer population is so overpopulated that the greatest threat to their population is disease and starvation. All while they strip the forest floor of any plants at deer height. They've basically sterilized American Forrest of the shrub, saplings, and undergrowth that a Forrest needs to sustain native habitats and a healthy ecology.

[–] Elting@piefed.social 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

We have also eradicated the wolf in many areas where they would keep the deer in check. My dog tries his best though, its on sight with deer. Hes actually gotten two of them.

Yeah, trying to explain to people who think hunting deer is unethical or bad for nature is always difficult. There is no such thing as unaltered nature in North America, the native populations were extremely good at creating forest that could pump out enough deer to feed millions of people and hundreds of thousands wolves at the same time.

Doing nothing is just wrecking the ecology that was shaped over hundreds if nothing thousands of years and creating systemic collapses that destroy what diversity we have left.

Deer are not as gentle as most people think

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 6 days ago

Yeah, they're actually very selfish lovers.

But tail fluffy 😢

[–] Hirom@beehaw.org 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Geese are good at guarding a property.

Someone sneaking in would at the very least ruffle some feathers.

Geese are cute

[–] ctry21@sh.itjust.works 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm a bit frightened of geese but still felt bad for them in the park near where we used to live, because kids would chase after them and the parents in that town would encourage it and laugh along. They only really fought back if they had goslings to protect

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago
