General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

So, someone please explain to me. Why is Count Binface the only opponent? I read that the other major parties aren't nominating anyone against Farage. But why? Do they want him to win?

Farage framed this by-election as the "people versus the establishment", however, all the other parties consider this by-election to be a farce.

If Count Binface ends up beating him, it will be the icing on the cake.

Serious question. Say that does happen, what then? Binface isn't a real person, but kind of a national joke like Jedi on the religion choices. If the count were to win, who if anyone would actually represent or would there need to be another election?

IIRC Count Binface is an actual British citizen who stands at elections, having changed his name by deed poll and appearing only in costume. His platform is obviously a joke, but there is a tradition of candidates running on joke platforms against high-profile candidates in the UK.

Huh TIL, the only thing I had known about him before this was the Matt Parker video where Matt was the count's official vote tally rep

Clacton already voted for a national joke who does nothing to represent them, it'd be business as usual 👍

If he's allowed to stand he's allowed to win. Boris Johnson didn't run under his real name either.
