Donald Trump threatens to attack Iran "hard" tonight, hours after saying he thinks the US-Iran ceasefire is "over". Trump earlier said of the Iranian leadership: "I don't want to deal with them anymore, they're scum. They're sick people, they're led by sick people".

"I don't want to deal with them anymore, they're scum. They're sick people, they're led by sick people"

Projection level: uncanny

Stupidest. War. Ever.

And, that's saying a lot.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The US has engaged in all sorts of pointless conflicts in the past.

This one is just so remarkably stupid. They can't even pretend that it's for any other reason than Trump's ego.

[–] T156@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

This one is just so remarkably stupid. They can't even pretend that it's for any other reason than Trump's ego.

Especially with the amount of back and forth between war and no war.

All it would do is put the credibility of the US in the urinal. Why would anyone believe a future administration trying to mediate a truce when their own history shows that they will vacillate back and forth constantly?

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Yea, I was wondering right now, is there anyone in the US who has an internal narrative in their mind around the Iran war that makes it appear somewhat sensible?

Among his fans absolutely. They're going to eat up whatever he says about weapons of mass destruction or literally anything else.

For the rest of us we certainly recognize that this is beyond pointless.

Europe, Russia, and China must get involved in the negotiations even without the US. These countries could present different ideas and Iran trusts them more.

[–] BrightCandle@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago (2 children)

America doesn't keep its word, there is zero negotiation to be done its incapable of making and sticking to a deal.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It really comes down to the bribes and whether they think they can get more bribes

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But Europe, China, and Russia could make a deal without the US.

[–] PapstJL4U@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A deal for what? Neither will use force to stop USA/Is real from doing anything.

It's either unpopular, expensive or not worth the risk. EU will not stand up for Iran, Russia can't and China...I don't know.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If the EU, Russia, and China proposed deal is accepted by Iran, this would pressure Trump to agree especially if other countries such as Pakistan, India, and Saudia Arabia accept. If the Trump rejects the deal, the EU, Russia, and China would go it alone. Yes, there is risk of confrontation with the US, but if the war continues there are also risks.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this would pressure Trump to agree...

HA!

HA! I SAY! HA!

Trump!? Pressured to do anything? Where the fuck have you been? This is the same trump that is crashing the world order and economy and doubling down on every stupid thing they do. Remember when they put punishing tariffs on an uninhabited island? Remember when they raised them later?

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Then there would be risk of a military confrontation between Europe, China, and Russia and the US and Israel. That's the purpose of Europe teaming up with China and Russia to negotiate; to present a powerful military force.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Its funny you think trump cares at all. He has continuously risked confrontation with every major nation at the drop of a hat all this time. Why would this be any different from any other day that ends with a "y" for the us administration?

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

He hasn't risked confrontation with Russia in Ukraine. If Europe, China, and Russia can negotiate a peace deal with Iran, the price of oil will go down. This would help the US economy, something which does concern Trump.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No amount of negotiating will work because the rogue state of israel started this mess and is intent on keeping it going.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

reminder everything israel does is bankrolled by the us.

they could stop israel today if they wanted to.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Europe, China, and Russia are not as close to Israel as the US. They have less influence, but they can tell Iran they will cease any military business with Israel as part of a peace deal.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The nuclear deal with Iran that Obama led fell apart when Trump reneged, even though Europe, China, and Russia were all part of the deal and still in. In this case, Israel will keep attacking and has kept attacking even when the US has signed a deal, and since this has been the main issue, there cannot possibly be any deal that works under these conditions. The US is the largest supporter of Israel, so they'd have to pull that support and sanction before Israel maybe stops, but even with dropped support and sanctions, Israel is a death cult and may turn to using nukes to keep going.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Iran might be willing to accept a deal in which Europe, China, and Russia cease any military business with Israel.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If israel keeps attacking anyway, then what's the point?

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The peace deal between Europe, China, and Russia and Iran would require these countries to protect Iran from attacks by Israel and the US.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How would they do that without facing the wrath of the US?

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

They will have to face the wrath of the US. If not, the war will continue because Iran would only accept a peace deal in which it is protected.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Russia can fuck off

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unless those groups agree to potentially face off directly with US and Israel military, there is relatively little they can do to change current US and Israel behavior.

One would think sanctions, but Trump has effectively been doing his best to self impose sanction-like results already.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, Europe, China, and Russia will have to confront the US and Israel if Trump rejects the deal. That's the reason Europe, China, and Russia must unite to negotiate with Iran.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But how wild that confrontation realistically materialize?

A sternly worded letter? That has been so effective in the past.

Punitive tariffs? Trump administration would love an excuse to levy retaliatory tariffs. Remember the nature of the administration is isolationist.

Sanctions? Maybe you get some more pressure, but again the administration trends towards isolationist authoritarian, and has already openly said they didn't care about the economic problems the people have compared to Iran.

Military confrontation? There no way any of those parties stick their neck out that much for Iran. Similar story for any clandestine operation to take out the administration.

The economic harm I suppose could inspire an assassination attempt by folks resourceful enough to make it happen.. But it is a longshot.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

Hopefully, Trump would be pressured to accept a peace deal between Europe, China, and Russia especially if countries such as Pakistan, India, and Saudi Arabia agree with the deal. If Trump rejects the deal, it might lead to military confrontation because Europe, China, and Russia would be obligated by the peace deal to protect Iran from attack. If these countries aren't willing to protect Iran, then there can be no peace deal and the war will continue. Europe cannot cry and say it is powerless to affect the war in Iran. It can but just isn't willing to.

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Europe, Russia, and China must get involved in the negotiations even without the US. These countries could present different ideas and Iran trusts them more.

I don't know your angle, but Iran, China and Russia pretty much share quite a lot in their ideas. They dislike democracies. But they love Shahed drones, which they aggressively export to Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar etc.

Also, Europe is a continent, not a country. We are not the same.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

China and Russia sharing similar ideas with Iran would make Iran trust them. The EU is an entity, but I say Europe because I think the UK should be included.

[–] HowRu68@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I say Europe because I think the UK should be included.

I sort of get what you're getring at, after reading some comments you made after your first one. But don't lump Europen countries on the same list as those others like Iran, Ruzzia & China. China Iran and Ruzzia are allies . They are not friends of Europe.

The USA has created an unsolvable mess which started as a" problem". The damage will already effect the world for 5- 10 years to come,. European countries and the EU didn't want anyhting to do with Trump's plan, and they have been continuously negotiating with both sides. But we have a demented mad dog on one side, and a more radicalized Iran currently without any real central gouvernement -as the prior one was decimated- on the other. Its just an extreme shitshow. I'm not sure lack of ideas is exactly the problem. But Trump and his cronies being in charge sure is the biggest one.

[–] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 1 week ago

Russia and China aren't friends of Europe, but Europe needs them to negotiate. Iran will trust Russia and China. Also, Europe alone cannot confront Trump if he rejects a peace deal between Europe and Iran.
