I live in Germany now. The other day I caught myself saying "it's only 28 degrees today." Oh no.

I think you've found the best phrase to describe British small talk. I'm going to use this.

"I was on my way to becoming a professional footballer until I took a brick to the knee"

I mean, I'm not in the cultural space on this, but trying to be objective and clinical, neither one of you cares about a mutual analysis of the weather, right? You're following a social convention to establish that you're friendly and agreeable and willing to interact with each other and not just coldly ignoring the other person. From that standpoint, the response makes sense.

Yeah but a key part of the British weather chat ritual is to feel like you're on the same page as each other about something. Social ritual profaned, hilarity ensues.

I'm afraid I will be sticking to my guns. If you think it's not too hot then you are objectively wrong in your subjective evaluation of it. How dare you

What irks me is that most of the population spend five months of the year complaining tediously about the cold and the wet and the dark, and when it's finally beautiful and the days are long, we still manage to find something to complain about.

The UK is clinically incapable of enjoying anything.

It's almost as if there's two ends on the spectrum where the middle is the only comfortable place to be

Its like the opening scene of the Inbetweeners movie everytime

"Its a bit hot"

"Its too hot"

That's not British, that's just neurotypical!
