I don't give a shit about the economy, I do care about the climate and society though.

If we have to go back to trading goods and services, so be it. Fuck the stock market.

Yeah yeah, where are we now with all previous predictions in the last 18-24 months?

Aren't we supposed to be all out of work right now? That coding is a solved problem? What about all the previous doom-callings?

Oh, what? Didn't happen? Maybe because these hypemakers are just full of shit.

Sounds like more people who have bought the hype, despite their pedigree. As while the business world is quickly learning AI can not replace all their staff like they hoped. LLMs are never going to become AGI, and the ML models that might actually have a shot are still in their infancy.

Eric Schmidt being amongst the signers makes me extra skeptical

https://www.wemustactnow.ai/

Includes 6 OpenAI executives, 3 Google ones, 10 Anthropic, a bunch of other virtue signallers.

What does it say?

AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years.

May it?!

This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy

What will happen?

"We are driving in the fog, and it is extraordinarily difficult to anticipate what will happen next."

We can really hold them to account for saying this specific thing!

What must we do, and why is it designed for corporate capture?

Economists, policymakers and technology leaders must act now to understand the economics of transformative AI and to build the incentives... to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.

I hate investor hype masking as fear mongering that's always going on around AI. Need that Scooby Doo unmasking meme.

Yeah? Welcome to the goddamn conversation morons. What do you think we've been saying for years now?

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 5 points 18 hours ago

I don’t know what you’ve been saying but what these guys are talking about isn’t what I consider a serious concern. It’s more of the “oh this is going to be so massive, it will transform everything” warn-bragging they’ve been doing from the jump.
