He's not bad. I mean...of course he's not Olivier or anything. But he's perfectly servicable.
The characters he plays are just all the same note; stoic, semi-serious tough guys who say very little.
There are a few episodes of Atlantis where he's given the opportunity to get out of that and actually show some range, and when that happens he's acceptable.
He's not going to win any awards or anything. But I've seen far far worse.
Its the same with Arnold swarzenegger (or something like that) being a really bad actor, bit can you imagine anyone else being the terminator?

Actually I unironically consider Arnold a good actor (In a very specific way).
If a measure of good is being able to take ownership of a role to the point where the audience can't imagine anyone else playing it...Arnold has the presence and the charisma to do that no matter what role he plays. Sure, his english may be stilted, and he's not going to be winning an oscar or anything.
But acting includes physicallity (IMO) and I can't picture anyone else in a huey puffing a cigar like a badass and then accusing his buddy of pushing too many pencils in the manliest hand shake scene ever in Predator. And then telling a bunch of kindergarteners that It's not a tumor...
Only Arnold can pull that off. He's iconic. And THAT takes at least some ability.

I didn't say criticism wasn't welcome, I said it seemed a bit mean spirited. Those are not the same thing.

I have never actually seen anything else he has acted in. Is he really bad at everything, or is he just bad at being Ronon?
He was a great Aquaman. And I like him on Stargate Atlantis.
Most of the things he's been in more recently are just not very good writing wise (Dune is not one of these). Even a great actor can't turn shit writing into something good unless they adlib line changes. Him being someone who is generally typecasted for his looks also doesn't help.
Maybe the problem with his depiction of Ronon was just that he was not good at acting as the stoic "boring" character. Which we have seen can be done well. Teal'c is a fan favorite, as well as Seven of Nine from Star Trek. Both of those characters are intentionally written to be very bland, but the actors were able to act with a performance that people were able to enjoy. Ronon was also written to be a similar stoic warrior type, but unlike those other two examples, his performance just came off flat. I wonder if maybe a character who is intentionally written with more dynamic range and everything is just a better fit for his acting abilities. A stoic warrior is just a difficult act to pull off.
He was good in dune imo. He's a bit average all told.
I liked him as Garrett in A Minecraft Movie. I know that's not really like the best example of good acting lmao, but it's what comes to mind. He was my favorite character in the movie and I even cosplayed as him. I thought him and Jack Black as Steve had pretty good chemistry and were able to bring a plausibly deniable gay angle to the characters. ("Let my hips guide you!")
