Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Fuck those Gestapo fuckers

A more appropriate headline:

An ICE [fascist paramilitary] fired at an SUV fleeing [an unmarked] car stop in Pennsylvania. That’s not how it should happen, policing experts say [because it endangers everyone]

Thanks. I'm glad that the recognition of passive language titles is becoming more obvious to everyone. I'm seeing comments, like yours, calling it out more often.

After nearly 3 years of genocide in Gaza I was going mad watching people being accepting of the "Israeli citizen kidnapped from tank" style language.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This headline isn't passive voice, though. Passive voice would be "SUV fired at by ICE". "ICE fired at SUV" is active voice.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Sure. But you're speaking specifically about grammar. I guess I am speaking more generally about the use of passive language not nessacarily "passive voice".

The action of violence is placed on the object instead of the person/people. It's not necessarily about strictly passive voice but removing humanity from the victims of the violent actions.

"ICE fired at innocents fleeing in SUV" is more appropriate. It makes it clear that the intent is to cause harm to the victims. The title infers there is possibly some reason to fire shots at a moving vehicle that could be justified in the scenario. Which there wasn't.

Police says you shouldn't do, does bot say it was illegal. Police just mad it was on video

You should be free to flee when guns are pointed at you without warning

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 35 points 2 days ago

You should be able to return fire.

When they aren't providing identification, any asshole with a Amazon account can cosplay as ICE.

[–] wheezy@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago

I'm more for "stand your ground" and shoot back when it comes to ICE.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Glad we have "police experts" to tell us that we aren't supposed to be getting shot in the back by police.

By masked unidentifiable people in unmarked cars

[–] knobbysideup@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Still missing the point, focusing on "They didn't block him good enough"

How is one to discern this isn't an attempted car jacking? And how else would one respond when a couple of random cars try to box you in and some jackhole comes up and immediately breaks your window while screaming at you?

Goddamn right I'm going to flee!

Earth is sphere-ish so by driving away, they were also moving toward the ICE agents and putting them in fear for their lives. Won't play well with the flat Earth segment of the base but you can jingle keys somewhere else to distract them.

Policing amateurs also say this

This is what happens when you hire a bunch of unstable racist neo-Nazis.
