I know I should probably just toss them, but the art student in me knows there must be some great use for them I just haven't thought of yet lol

Be careful. When a thread king gets to a certain size, it may acquire sentience.

[-] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Can confirm. Same thing happened to me, but with neurons. Do not recommend.

In the crafting world, these are called orts. And some people get super creative with them! I've seen them user to decorate cards, to make collage art, to fill little clear Christmas ornaments or felt animals, etc. I've been saving the ones from my current project because I want to take a picture of the finished cross stitch next to all its orts. It feels like a visual representation of "you can't make omelet without breaking a few eggs", you know?

Should make a cloud out of them. It would be an ort cloud.

[-] NABDad@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago

My current YouTube feed would recommend encasing it in epoxy, then using a lathe to make a bowl out of it.

[-] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

... Using up some of this epoxy resin I found in my workshop ...

[-] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago

First I give them to my cat, then to my roomba.

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 17 points 7 months ago

My cat would probably just eat them. Then I'd have to deal with them again when they come out the other side ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

[-] jabathekek@sopuli.xyz 5 points 7 months ago

Pulling poopy string out of butts is not fun. :{

[-] Mossheart@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 months ago

This is known as "flossing the cat" in our household.

Don't pull, it can cause injury. Snip and be patient. And don't let cats eat string.

[-] Godort@lemm.ee 4 points 7 months ago

Depends on the situation. As long as everyone consents, then who am I to judge how some people have fun?

STORY TIEEEM!

My friend was working as a security guard in a sort of semi-public down town walkway in a major North American city. He's doing his rounds when he starts smelling shit, like actual shit. Maybe someone popped a squat somewhere (there's a lot of addiction in that area), so he starts looking around and eventually comes across a woman completely covered in shit, like head to toe. My bro's so shocked he can't think, all he can do is stare at her and growl. She just nods and starts walking out.

If only sex work had legal protections I wouldn't have to tell you this story.

[-] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

What are you doing with cat poop that would make this an issue lol

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 9 points 7 months ago

If you save enough, they actually make decent stuffing for throw pillows and similar projects.

[-] Pistcow@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago

take a lil nibble

[-] Norgur@kbin.social 5 points 7 months ago

Burn it. What else?

[-] NewPerspective@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

My wife and I started using a company called Ridwell so we could recycle things our municipal recycling doesn't take. Plastic film, light bulbs, batteries, and threads. From whole clothes that they will donate to tiny fragments. I'm not 100% sure what they do with the tiny bits without looking it up, but they'll take them.

[-] nyan@lemmy.cafe 4 points 7 months ago

Looks like they might be at a good length for making (multicolored) tassels, if you've got anything that might be improved by a few of those.

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

I do have some homemade lampshades that could do with tassels... I'd need to save up a lot more bits of thread though! That may become the long term goal for these

[-] DharmaCurious@startrek.website 4 points 7 months ago

I save up thread, yarn and fabric scraps that are too small to do anything with in a shoebox, and then use it to stuff small pillows and such.

[-] ComradeBunnie@aussie.zone 3 points 7 months ago

I've been composting them at the end of each project.

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago

I hoard my ORTs in a mason jar against the day I come up with a weird project for them. Considering putting them inside a set of handmade dice, maybe ๐Ÿค”

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

After reading some of the responses here I have also started an ort jar! If I save enough maybe I'll stuff a pillow with them ๐Ÿ˜€

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago

Ambitious, but you are a fast stitcher so who knows lol

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

I've been making lamps lately and someone suggested tassels for a lamp shade so that may be an option too! Either way it's going to be a while before I have enough ๐Ÿ˜…

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago

Umm excuse me where can one find pics of said lamp crafts?

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

I haven't posted any since I left Reddit, but here's one I'm very happy with, along with my cat lol

[-] thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee 2 points 7 months ago

Oh wow that is a whole entire vibe ๐Ÿ˜

If there's no more suitable community I know !imadethis@lemm.ee would certainly appreciate projects like this. Just for future reference!

[-] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Thanks! I will check them out! I mostly take old broken lamps that are bound for the trash and use the parts to make new ones. This was an old brass lamp from the 80s that my mom asked me to throw away, so of course it went straight into my car lol the shade took a while to make though

[-] n3m37h@sh.itjust.works 1 points 7 months ago

Give it to your cat, if you don't have one, get one and give it all the pieces
