Want to upgrade your F-91W? The open-source Sensor Watch is a board-swap that uses the same display, housing, and wrist-strap but lets you program your own functionality.

[-] jacktherippah@lemmy.world 41 points 8 months ago

Woah, that's cool.

[-] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 21 points 8 months ago

That's...surprisingly cheap!

[-] Godort@lemm.ee 75 points 8 months ago

Rolex has spent the last 50 years trying to rebrand itself as a luxury watch brand but they started out as sport watches. Essentially what this Casio watch is.

The people that designed Rolex watches wanted them to be basically indestructible. They're wildly over-engineered. They have shockmounts so you can drop them without breaking the balance staff and most are waterproof.

[-] nBodyProblem@lemmy.world 51 points 8 months ago

That’s because Swiss precision is meaningless when a $1 chip can keep time better than a $6k mechanical watch. The only way they can survive is by selling the luxury angle.

[-] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 12 points 8 months ago

I bought a mechanical watch cause I like how the second hand moves continuously instead of "ticking" and it doesn't need a battery.
But yeah, if you want a watch that's like the early Rolex's today, buy a Seiko.

Oh trust me, I understand. I own mechanical watches because there is a definite romantic appeal to them.

However, I have had more than one seiko automatic die from vibration while riding motorcycles. Even high end watches like Rolexes can have -4/+8 seconds per day timekeeping error and be within “normal” tolerances.

Meanwhile, a cheap digital quartz watch will typically be accurate to within a few seconds a month, even before we consider that many of them can sync to atomic clocks. They’re also pretty much indestructible.

I lost my Casio watch somewhere in my closet about 3 years ago (I am very lazy).

I still hear it beep every hour.

place a marker halfway in your closet. every hour stand at the marker and see if the beep is to your left or right. Should be able to find it in <8 attempts.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 34 points 8 months ago

Dude is lazy and you want him to stand up 8 times in a day?

[-] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 11 points 8 months ago

the only alternative is to piss off your S.O. by asking if they've seen it and then they'll find it instantly

And if it beeps on the same side no matter which way you're facing, you might be wearing it.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.ca 46 points 8 months ago

Get what works. Fuck all those dick measuring contests.

I gave my wife a really nice watch made out of wood, with an aquamarine watchface, for her birthday.
She had wanted that watch for a long time before we even met, but couldn't afford it.
Now it's gathering dust on her nightstand cause she's afraid she's gonna forget to take it off before showering, so she's wearing my old f91w instead.

[-] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 34 points 8 months ago

My wife is in the army. This is the watch that soldiers wear; it has every function you need, and absolutely none that you don't, and it's cheap as shit so you can afford it on your crappy military pay. It will not give a flying fuck what kind of abuse you put it through, and in a pinch it will probably stop a bullet.

[-] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 34 points 8 months ago

I love Casio watches; I’ve got about a hundred of them.

The F91W is most notable for being the cheapest, brand name watch you can buy just about anywhere. Even the poorest dirt farmer can afford to own one. And it has all of the features most people need.

That said, it’s not the best option for us westerners. They are very tiny watches, more suited to a child’s wrist than a grown man. A better option is a Casio G-Shock GW-M5610U. It’s solar powered with atomic timekeeping, meaning it never runs out of power and always has the correct time.

Plus, it’s way more durable compared to an F91W. If I could buy a watch for everyone on the planet, it’d be the 5610.

[-] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 63 points 8 months ago

Nice try, but I could buy ten F91Ws for one 5610. Wouldn't you rather have two watches on each limb AND two watches on your dick than one slightly fancier watch?

[-] FMT99@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

The real flex

[-] KISSmyOS@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago

Solar powered watches are a useless gimmick. The solar cell's life span is shorter than 10 years, which is how long a Casio f91w's battery will last.
And it's not more eco-friendly either, cause it needs a rechargable battery which requires lithium.

[-] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 12 points 8 months ago

I literally have 20 year old solar powered watches that still work. And even if the cell dies in a 5610, it’s easily replaced. You can even do it as a user; they’re incredibly easy to work on.

And I love the overall convenience of solar/atomic. I don’t give a shit if it’s more eco-friendly or not :D

As a grown man with child size wrists good I need more options. Most watches I looked at are huge on me. I got a Seiko 5 which fits well though.

I have the calculator watch one and absolutely love it. The reaction people have when they notice is priceless.

[-] InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works 44 points 8 months ago

I like to imagine the rev/fwd buttons on this one is for the time travel function.

[-] cdf12345@lemmy.world 20 points 8 months ago

Reverse Time / Teleport Forward

Seems pretty close to me!

[-] Gonroz@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

This one looks dope and definitely fancier than mine. I have the ca53w-1

We're still one of those planets that think digital watches are a neat idea.

https://www.watchesofespionage.com/blogs/woe-dispatch/casio-f-91w-the-preferred-watch-of-terrorists

I got this watch because it's the preferred watch of terrorists. I like how light it is but the strap did break after not taking it off for a year. I think the oils in my wrist broke it down.

Casio has a line of ladies watches with floral borders, I wear one as a man and get lots of compliments.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 14 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Ooh - do they have one in Hawaiian print?

Edit: Searching for "Casio Hawaiian Print" was fun.

How did OP drop the watch if they never take that bad boy off?

[-] robocall@lemmy.world 23 points 8 months ago

Maybe OP dropped himself with the watch on

[-] Grass@sh.itjust.works 10 points 8 months ago

The amount of compliments I also got from the cheapest watch at a grocery store (also Casio)... I've seen listings for some really expensive ones with the same shape and general appearance but different colors and maybe features. Does anyone know what's up with those?

[-] yuri@sh.itjust.works 7 points 8 months ago

Casio does variants of the same model with all stainless steel cases/bands for a bit more, but it’s usually the japan exclusive colorways that see prices north of $70 or so. Casios are usually pretty affordable!

They're like $20 bucks now but totally worth the extra cost.

Square Casios are immortal.

I couldn't find one in store so the misses bought me one off ebay. It was fake and broke in the ocean.

Watch out. Plenty of fakes of a cheap watch out there.

[-] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 8 points 8 months ago

I have one, they're great.

[-] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 8 points 8 months ago

My favorite watch I've ever owned cost $7.

[-] TrousersMcPants@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

Hell yeah Casio. I have a G-shock so it's still a "fancy" watch but this thing will probably outlive me

i have a casio watch, but i cant wear it, because if i do i keep looking at time every few seconds
