Jonathan Hickman wrote a short comic series called Pax Romana about futuristic mercenaries who perform a coup on a Catholic Church funded mission to go back in time to the 4th century to prevent the East/West split of the Roman empire. Yeah you’d have a pocket protector, a plastic or leather pouch holding your pen/s so they wouldn’t leak on your shirt or your compass would catch. Keeps them from falling out if you bend over. Usually have a compass, pen, pencil, ruler etc depending on your job.

My parents/older family members/friends and teachers had them before everything was computers and phones.
