At least those people who have been hoarding shipping containers of pennies so that they can sell the metal when they're no longer currency are going to be happy.

Or, maybe a limited annual minting for the coin collector sickos.

Broken clock etc etc. I only see pennies as stealing. If you charge me $9.99 instead of $10, you're doing some kind of fuck-fuck psychology game to make me think more is less. Pennies are worthless as a practical currency and only result in predatory business practices.

lol in mexico's supermarkets you were asked to donate whatever cents were left and that was used as a tax evasion scheme.

[–] Sulv@hexbear.net 9 points 8 hours ago

At least half of chain stores in America do the exact same thing

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 8 points 9 hours ago

Many such cases worldwide. "Please round up your purchase to donate!" As if we don't know what they're doing???

Even in countries without 1c or equivalent, they do the 9.99 or whatever. You won't get away from it. Sometimes they do 9.98 or 9.97 as neat little tricks.

so worst case scenario i might save 2 or 3 cents? SEE LIBS?!? TRUMP SAID HE WOULD SAVE US MONEY!! PROMISES MADE. PROMISES KEPT!!!

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 37 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Trump is jealous Canada did this a decade ago that's why he wants to annex them

[–] AnExcellentSteelHorse@hexbear.net 19 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

It's been a big improvement too

[–] GaveUp@hexbear.net 16 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

At this point I'd even argue for doing away with nickels with how expensive everything is

[–] Sleve_McDichael@hexbear.net 36 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

What if they just stopped minting money all together?

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 43 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

When they retired the half cent coin in 1857, it had an inflation-adjusted value of about 18 cents, for comparison.

[–] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 20 points 11 hours ago

So what I’m hearing is nickels need to go too

[–] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 57 points 13 hours ago

It's so ridiculous how the country needs a completely unsensible leader in order to do sensible things

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 55 points 14 hours ago

Dudes on a roll. Another proposal can get behind. Even the unhoused don’t want those things

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 16 points 13 hours ago

I did not know US still minted pennies. That's one good thing that should have been done.
