Like… say if someone hypothetically had an extremely high bitrate file that includes DolbyVision + HDR10+ on the video codec side… and Dolby TrueHD ATMOS or DTS-HD MA 7.1 on the audio side and an .ASS only forced subtitle track.

Let’s also then say someone outside of the original host network only has an older HD LCD panel with no HDR and no receiver to decode any modern / high-quality audio codec formats, so there would be a need to be able to transcode both the video and audio down to something like an SDR tone-mapped 1080p 20mb/s video track with those .ASS subtitle tracks hard-coded into the video stream and an AAC stereo audio track.

Can Jellyfin auto-configure for that or can someone manually choose some set of preferences based off of that…?

Also, would notably un-savvy users outside of that home network have to configure some esoteric set up with special side-loaded clients for playback and Tailscale so that they could securely access said media?

…Hypothetically speaking?

…Because if the answer is “no” or “it’s not THAT hard to set up” is even close to the answer to any of those questions, then it’s a non-starter.

I haven’t checked in on Jellyfin for a while now, but don’t they still have issues with hardware transcoding support?

Not to mention the lack of software clients on other platforms for just playback that Plex has been established on for years and even multiple device generations like with PlayStation, Roku, Fire Stick, etc.?

Also you have to configure your own reverse proxy / Tailscale set up to securely access a content library remotely, right - as opposed Plex’s relatively simpler remote access configuration?

At this point, I think we all can see the critical tipping point of enshittification writing on the wall for Plex.

I know everyone says Jellyfin, but given how easy Plex still handles hardware transcoding on many common current standard NAS configurations as well as the somewhat non-standard network configurations needed to otherwise easily yet securely access content remotely from external locations, not to mention the decent UX and deep integration across all client platforms whether web, iOS, Android, Smart TV, and even things like PlayStation and Xbox hardware, but do others here have some any thoughts on how to jump ship to get 1:1 features here at some point?

Many people have been on Plex for more than a decade and have seen it slowly try to reposition its business model to one that is leaning toward something more akin to a streaming subscription rather than a simple personal content library software… but I still have yet to feel the need to switch… at least not yet.

Wanna use this opportunity to shill an awesome cookie recipe by Adam Regusea.

Recipe :

Ingredients

  • 113g (1 stick) butter
  • 200g sugar (1 cup granulated or brown, but I prefer 1 2/3 cups powdered sugar)
  • 5-10g (1-2 teaspoons) molasses (optional, replicates the taste of brown sugar)
  • 1 egg
  • 10g (1 teaspoon of ~~Morton~~ whatever brand you want kosher) salt (use 2/3rds of that if your butter is salted)
  • 4-8g (1-2 teaspoons) vanilla extract
  • 3g (1/2 teaspoon) baking soda
  • 230g (about 1.5 cups) bread flour (1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour is OK instead)
  • 100g chocolate chips or other mix-ins

Instructions

  1. Get the oven (convection if possible) heating to 375ºF/190ºC
  2. Melt the butter
  3. Mix in the sugar (and optional molasses) until smooth
  4. Mix in the egg until very smooth
  5. Mix in the salt (FYI, some people might not like their cookies as salty as I do), vanilla, baking soda, flour and chips

The dough should be a little sticky — you can chill it for a few minutes to make it easier to shape.

  1. Divide the dough into six 115g portions and roll each into something like a golf ball.

  2. Space them evenly on a baking sheet — no parchment paper or grease necessary (but you can use parchment paper if wanted).

  3. Flatten each ball into something like a hockey puck and tidy up the circular shape.

  4. Turn the oven off and turn the broiler/grill on maximum.

  5. Give it a minute or two to heat up, then put in the cookies near the top.

  6. Let the broiler brown the tops of the cookies until golden — this should only take a minute, so don't walk away or they'll burn.

  7. If you're doing multiple pans of cookies, brown them each one at a time.

  8. Turn the broiler off and the oven back on to 375ºF/190ºC.

  9. Give the broiler a couple minutes to cool down, then return the cookies to the oven.

  10. Bake until they spread and look done to you — mine take about eight minutes as this stage, but they'll take longer if you don't have a convection fan.

For perfect “chewy” texture, take them out when they just look a hair under-baked.

Let the cookies cool and solidify before scraping them off the baking sheet.

When a company is using AI in place of a person, it's not a sign of that they are "futuristic" or "forward-thinking..." It's a sign they are cheap, chase fads, and make short-sighted decisions that are not designed to improve their relationship with their customer.

Anyone using some headless white-label monthly subscription version of ChatGPT in an attempt to save a nickel on their bottom line - even if it means making everything worse for the company, product, employees, and customers in every way possible - is probably someone you don't want to do ANY kind of business with - whether you're a contractor, customer, or client.

The democratization of technology is a double-edged sword.

For every improvement in UX and lowering of a once impassible barrier of entry, we seem to inevitably gain a massive number of “eXpErTs” who can suddenly stand upon the now much lower skill floor.

Shortly thereafter seems to be a destruction of the general reliability of whatever field these “eXpErTs” flood - usually a field which used to be inherently cryptic and had complex prerequisites just to begin operation within, let alone master.

Like… it makes me almost miss when “using a computer” meant you had to understand how to browse a directory in DOS…

Because at least then you literally couldn’t begin to operate in the field unless you could wrap your head around understanding the basics of syntax.

Now you can just have an entire legion of dullards misspell or misspeak 30% of a malformed question to some random free LLM that still has trouble telling you “how many Rs are in the word strawberry,” and have it confidently fart back out a wrong answer that they will then copy-paste into a paper or article which will then be added to the pile of growing misinformation currently stuffing a frighteningly expanding part of our collective knowledge base.

Except FOSS. Because if you can fork it, it cannot be enshittified… every time they attempt to, another fork can be made.

Favorite video about Pete is from Some More News back a few years ago just before Pete helped Biden consolidate all the fragmented neoliberal support he needed to suddenly turn the tide right before Super Tuesday that was otherwise resulting in Sanders gaining ground.

Pete is a weasel… a well-spoken one and perhaps once a decent dude… and even an ally in our country’s current dark moments… but Pete is NOT fit to lead when the left has a chance at any sort of power.

He will sell us all out for the rich donors who showed up for his wine cave campaign fundraiser. And trading Main Street voters for Wall Street voters is what REALLY has been what most helped Republicans win… at least since at least Reagan’s era.

Kinda encompasses how I feel when I drop in on a sub Lvl 10 Cadet to help with clearing mission objectives.

Just in case you missed and needed a TL;DW summary jingle.
