Some nice news for once :) I have devised a genius plan to end global warming, engineer a super coral that is photosynthetic and plant it everywhere. As it accumulates and deposits carbonate it will suck CO2 out of the ocean and therefore the atmosphere. We will end up living on gigantic coral structures because the sea level rose, but at least the corals will save us.

I read recent articles from NEO and others:

And they paint a very worrying picture. It seems the imperialists are unwilling to allow Russia to "win" - what they mean exactly by this; I'm not sure. Will they be pacified if Ukraine accepts a deal with the current lines as new borders? If not, it seems the only way they can realistically continue this is by using their own troops; which Putin will most likely see as an act of war and has said that he will be forced to use nuclear weapons. I don't know what will happen. The imperialists won't want to settle with Russia, because it will prove that NATO is a paper tiger and might lead to its dissolution as other member states pull out (but maybe this won't happen, several states have applied for membership recently). But surely they will not risk nuclear confrontation? Or do we get to the point where they keep pushing with incrementally more warmongering actions like sending advisors, weapons, "limited number" of troops, until Russia actually pushes the button? Then we get a scene with Putin negotiating with Biden on the phone to disarm the nuke in-flight? (there was a film about that right?)

I think they need us terminally online selfhoster Linux tankies to help them in this regard

I stumbled upon the Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist)'s articles about immigration, and to me they have a whiff of nationalism and fascism. Links:

Their point seems to be that immigration is bad because it brings down the conditions and wages of british workers, and can be used to break strikes, for example the doctors strike. That it degrades the quality of public services like housing, healthcare etc. etc. In the description of the meeting, they say "how should we respond?"

To me this just sounds like EDL (English Defence League, rightwing nationalists) rhetoric. I feel like a better approach is to understand the part that this historically imperalist nation plays and has played, and to have sympathy with those immigrants who come here only to end up superexploited, instead of appealing to nationality and only worrying about british workers. Maybe I am being idealist? not sure.

Any thoughts? Immigration is a pretty big deal in british politics, and I would like to hear some other marxist viewpoints

I work in a small startup company, about 14 people. Recently, the leadership asked us to sign something to waive a limit on the working hours we do (called the Working Time Directive in the UK, limits time to 48 hours a week). However, many lab scientists here have been working significantly more (60+ hours) for many months, which would be illegal.

I thought this might give us an opportunity to have a bit more leverage, as not everyone has signed this yet. If we make some demands and refuse to sign it until we do, we can threaten legal action (is what I thought).

I spoke to some of the scientists and they are all a bit fed up at the amount of time they are being asked to work. Not that the leadership ever says you must come in, just they say that these projects need to be done, and the work just takes that long. We also are not paid overtime at all, so these scientists are working sometimes 100hr weeks for equivalently less than minimum wage. I don't know everyone's salaries exactly but I am pretty sure it's 28-32k gbp sort of range. Of course they have sold us the idea that we are working to build the company in the early stages and they have given us shares in the company, but we can only use these after staying in the company for 5 years (entrapment).

Should we form a group and make some demands? What do you think? How should we go about it? I have no experience organising and I don't think anyone else does either. The others have expressed interest though.

Also should be noted that a couple of the workers are relying on this job to sponsor their visa and otherwise they could be forced to leave the country.

Your advice would be much appreciated comrades

Rojava, AANES and Syria (whiskers.bim.boats)

I was wondering if anyone had some ML perspectives on the situation in Syria. I recently learned about Rojava, and I was wondering about the background of the conflict between the Assad government and the AANES, afaik they both have marxist roots and so I wanted to learn about the contradictions and reasons for the combat.

I wanted to drop a comment on this post to try and incite some lib rage, and it seems to have been successful. We also got some free orientalism thrown in! What a bargain. Would appreciate some backup dunking on these fools.

I don't quite understand what's going on here, what's the context? I read that Iran has been seizing oil ships, which is pretty based, but what is the bigger picture? Would appreciate if anyone could throw some light on it.

Flagrant racism on multiple levels, it is horrendous to see it flaunted in broad daylight. They say first one racist thing and then back it up with orientalism.

Hi there,

Making a post to see if anyone has any ideas about the problems i'm currently having. I have installed Arch via EndeavourOS as a secondary OS on my work laptop (other OS is Win 11). The laptop in question is a thinkpad p15 v3, which has an i7 12700H, and the integrated Intel Alder Lake-P gpu. I'm using Gnome on wayland as my DE at the moment.

The only game I have been playing so far is Hollow Knight through proton (the native version had very bad input lag), and I have a couple of issues with it:

  • Performance, on battery power, is pretty bad, around 30-40 fps with low settings. When on AC, the laptop starts to get really hot (70 C) and the exhaust feels like a hair dryer, but performance increases only by 10 fps or so. I'm pretty sure I installed necessary drivers following the arch wiki page.
  • Audio, this is the major problem. Endeavour came with pulseaudio installed, which I removed and replaced with pipewire, pipewire-pulse, and wireplumber. When playing Hollow Knight the sound will often turn into crunchy 8-bit sounding stuff, which I thought was a buffer underrun, and I followed the fixes listed on arch wiki, but to no avail.

Now the audio has seemingly completely stopped working, in pavucontrol I have 5 output devices, but switching through all of them whilst playing audio from my browser still results in no sound through headphones. In the configuration, there is "Alder Lake-PCH-P High definition audio controller" and it remains "Off". When I switch it to "On", it switches back immediately. The pipewire services are running however.

If anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated

Some logs and configs:

I absolutely would, he's abusing his position as prime minister to make himself filthy rich. Of course all of the previous conservative PMs have done the same, and I think they are all equally disgusting.

Re ethical consumption, my opinion is, if you don't absolutely need a new phone (broken beyond use) don't get a new one. And then when you do get a "new" phone, get a second hand one. Fairphone may be "ethical" but it's still marketing to get you to spend money on a new device. Reusing one will always be more ethical.

I think you just reinvented personal websites? You can put on there whatever you want, and you can link it to anything else on the internet with the original open standard for communicating between networked computers.

An article I thought was very interesting. It highlighted to me how having technology development centralised like this allows for faster innovation and development. Red Sails also has lots of other good articles too.

Hi,

I'm looking for a package that will allow me to configure some rules for moving folders and then watch a folder and automatically move folders or files that match rules to a certain other directory. Does something like this exist?

The use case is that I have data being saved to a single directory by other devices, and then I would like to reorganize it based on the file or folder name.

Or anyone have any other ideas of how to do this?

I’m wondering if there are any good foss apps for connecting to a garmin bike computer (520) to transfer GPX files?

I used to use Komoot to generate my routes, and then their garmin app would download them from my account. This isn’t very foss, so I was looking for some better tools to make this work.

I was planning to use OsmAnd to create the route file, but then after that I would have to use Garmin Connect to transfer the file. (and with storage sandboxing, that would be very fiddly)

Any tips?
