Because the AI has to do the work of translating the image to text before deciding what to do with it

Yeah, I think it’s the decent thing to do, ever since the early days of alt in html. I do hope it’s useful to humans, but it’s probably also true that AI is vacuuming it all up as well.

How many times have you seen a comment "Thanks for the transcript!"? I think I've seen one once

Blind folk aren't reading memes, they're listening to podcasts and audiobooks. Think about it. A transcribed meme isn't funny in the slightest so what would be the point?

The ai companies got themselves a ton of free labour

I'm not going to say "die on this hill" because it's more of a mountain but yeah
