It is the oldest Lemmy instance, it is widely federated, and it isn't a "freeze peach" shit hole. It is the most "defaulty" option, especially for people who aren't familiar with the Fediverse.

The joinlemmy instance recommender also dropped lemmy.world sometime ago and lemmy.ml is one of the more active general instances for new waves to join.
