Regardless of whether you’re vegan or not, I’ve always found being explicitly anti-vegan profoundly weird. It has to be because of either conscious or unconscious guilt, right? Vegans existing doesn’t harm anyone in any way, so the only explanation I can come up with for hating them is that there are people who cannot handle even a zeptosecond of self-reflection because they are tiny babies

the less-generous read is that they're just treatler getting defensive about their treats

Same thing. Back when I had more treaterlite tendencies in me I would get defensive about my treats precisely because I was deeply uncomfortable with the facts about my treats.

It's because there's been a push in online to demonize vegans and paint them as annoying and woke. It's basically the same as the anti-feminist stuff over 10 years ago.

There needn't be a push. People isolated from significant global warming discourse or animal rights issues, which is a load of people wherever one may be, don't really get why vegans are "the way they are."

Not even rhetoric, the mere existence of vegans with explanations of their reasons can create thoughts of "are you saying I don't care about the environment/animal welfare" in their skulls. I'm not even vegan, I just happen to know a few, but talking about those people's veganism, I've seen too many people have really weird notions behind their eyes before reaching the conclusion "whatever"

Nah, that’s more reflective of what vegans would like to think their motivation is. I think it’s a combination of toxic masculinity and class bias. The former, that stereotype of the “my food poops on your food” mentality, rah rah hunter man eat meat be strong hairy caveman. The latter, that goes back to the feudal era when the peasants subsisted on root vegetables and garbage cuts of meat that had to be boiled for three hours just to be able to chew it, while the nobles and aristocrats feasted on rib roasts.

So for them, veganism means being a poor soy boy. And you know how reactionaries get when anyone suggests they reconsider how they see themselves vis a vis class and masculinity.
