I’m a vegan and i agree. This behavior hurts our cause

Oh look, it's the pick me loser who always shows up in these threads saying you have to be respectful to carnists!

There's also ”mmm muh bacon and borgir” and ”vegoons are weak”, of course.

I know the words ”vegan” and ”reddit” in the title meant I shouldn't have even clicked the link, but…

Regardless of whether you’re vegan or not, I’ve always found being explicitly anti-vegan profoundly weird. It has to be because of either conscious or unconscious guilt, right? Vegans existing doesn’t harm anyone in any way, so the only explanation I can come up with for hating them is that there are people who cannot handle even a zeptosecond of self-reflection because they are tiny babies

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 33 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

the less-generous read is that they're just treatler getting defensive about their treats

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago

Same thing. Back when I had more treaterlite tendencies in me I would get defensive about my treats precisely because I was deeply uncomfortable with the facts about my treats.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 28 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's because there's been a push in online to demonize vegans and paint them as annoying and woke. It's basically the same as the anti-feminist stuff over 10 years ago.

[–] AmarkuntheGatherer@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 6 months ago

There needn't be a push. People isolated from significant global warming discourse or animal rights issues, which is a load of people wherever one may be, don't really get why vegans are "the way they are."

Not even rhetoric, the mere existence of vegans with explanations of their reasons can create thoughts of "are you saying I don't care about the environment/animal welfare" in their skulls. I'm not even vegan, I just happen to know a few, but talking about those people's veganism, I've seen too many people have really weird notions behind their eyes before reaching the conclusion "whatever"

Nah, that’s more reflective of what vegans would like to think their motivation is. I think it’s a combination of toxic masculinity and class bias. The former, that stereotype of the “my food poops on your food” mentality, rah rah hunter man eat meat be strong hairy caveman. The latter, that goes back to the feudal era when the peasants subsisted on root vegetables and garbage cuts of meat that had to be boiled for three hours just to be able to chew it, while the nobles and aristocrats feasted on rib roasts.

So for them, veganism means being a poor soy boy. And you know how reactionaries get when anyone suggests they reconsider how they see themselves vis a vis class and masculinity.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 42 points 6 months ago (3 children)

I think a lot of reactionary anti veganism stems from people knowing fuck dick all about cooking so without steaks and shit they envision a lifetime of eating canned green beans and if vegans ever want to not be a minority ideology they need to teach cooking skills like they're maoists bringing literacy to the mountain ranges

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 20 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Everytime I imagined a vegan utopia, I couldn't imagine it happening with a mass education program to teach cooking skills. And especially by making a bunch of recipes and having cafeterias/canteens in every street that serve cheap, filling and healthy vegan food. Such a mass program would eliminate hunger, many diseases and animal agriculture pretty much.

Alas, I can also imagine the liberals going "errrm nerd, what about freedom?".

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 20 points 6 months ago (1 children)

And especially by making a bunch of recipes and having cafeterias/canteens in every street that serve cheap, filling and healthy vegan food.

I imagine this is the real solution. People are tired, and just want to do something easy they know. Humans deserve easily accessible, cheap food. Just getting rid of real estate and rents would do much of the work to making this happen.

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Nationalize McDonald's and make it have a vegan menu and it'll take off. People want convenience and low cost

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Iirc they have fully vegetarian mccdonalds in India. It's funnt becauae it's not like the processed sludge at fast foodplaces even resembles meat as it is.

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

Exactly. Just make sure the flavor and texture are close enough and the average person won't give a shit

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago

I'm an adult, I hate vegetables. We exist, and we demand to be taken seriously

i-cant

[–] yet_another_commie@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 6 months ago

Fuck carnism and fuck vegan bootlicking. If cows could take up arms, there would be no need for veganism

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 36 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

A lot of these people get really uncomfortable when you point out they're behaving exactly the same way racists do about black activism. Or homophobes to LGBT activism. The cry throughout that thread is repeatedly "You're trying to force your beliefs on me" and yeah, they are, and that's ok, they morally believe that animals shouldn't be killed for food just as others morally believe trans people deserve equal rights. Some of them believe animals should have equal rights too, some might not, but the various rights causes are comparable.

White supremacy is the contradiction for racial causes. Male cishetero supremacy(patriarchy) is the contradiction for lgbt people. Human supremacy over animals is the contradiction in the vegan cause.

I am not vegan but I find it relatively easy to see this.

The reactionaries in all causes that are fundamentally about supremacism of a sort are all very similar.

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 32 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Carnism isn’t even pro meat, it’s just a reactionary response to veganism. Nobody actually wants to have a diet consisting solely of raw steak and eggs.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 19 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Carnism just means using animal products, what you're describing is a ””carnivore”” diet.

Unfortunately, I think some people do want that.

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the correction

Activism is only worthwhile when I'm supporting my country's military.

[–] EatPotatoes@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Why don’t they join the foreign league if they care so much.

[–] ButtBidet@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Seriously. Willing another country to fight your proxy war seems Amerikan football fan AF. (Sorry how do I describe someone who likes watching poor people hurt themselves for his entertainment?)

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

No, you nailed it. This is couch fan behaviour.

Remember when a bunch of them did at the beginning and they all got blown up because they couldn't stop tweeting about where their FOB was?

Reading reddit was your first mistake

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Posting it here to make us read it as well was the second mistake.

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago

The solution to both me going to reddit and me making you read reddit is posting more

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 6 months ago (3 children)

From the linked thread:

“it's too ingrained for the masses to be simply guilt tripped to stop eating animals. They simply taste too good.”

A wild new spin on victim blaming for 2025. “Sorry you have to die pig. I know you can do basic arithmetic and display emotional responses on par with a human toddler but I simply cannot handle the idea of not eating something as tasty as you. It’s my biology. Ps if you hurt my dog I’ll kill you”

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 20 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Funny how it's always just about your individual choice to eat meat and the animals being killed don't factor into the equation.

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 17 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Funny how it's always just about your individual choice

I'm imagining a libertarian dude brother who defends animal rights by invoking the NAP.

Would be a funny type a guy. If any of these reddit liberals were consistent in their own liberalism they would be vegans at the bare minimum.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

a debate between that guy and a "you can kill and eat specific animals if they tried to kill you" guy would send me

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Guy #1: Don't eat animals! It violates the NAP!

Guy # 2: What if the animal was violating the NAP?

Guy #1: The animals can't understand the NAP so you can't kill them for not following it. Even if a creature doesn't understand the NAP, doesn't mean it doesn't apply to them. For example, killing a human baby would definitely go against the NAP.

Guy #3: I wonder if I can bait animals into violating the NAP so I can hunt them 🤔.

Guy #4: Let's teach English and the NAP to the animals possadist-ufo

Imagine a sit-com of just different types of libertarians and anarchists trying to live in the same town and adjust to each other. There will be a liberal who thinks he is part of the team but he is not.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I'd have some respect for a guy like that, of course it'd never happen because lolbertarians are treatlerite hogs who apply their own principles inconsistently in a matter that suits them.

It'd necessitate a questioning of their own beliefs too, because the continued existence of a practice like factory farming doesn't reflect well on the Free Market.

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

Back when I used to debate with libertarians, the more consistent among them did acknowledge the need for a legal system that would restrict the "rights" of individuals to violate the NAP and to enforce private property rights.

Some of the more radical libertarians would take this as betrayal, while the white supremacists didn't give a shit about philosophical debates and instead just wanted to segregate themselves from minorities (and they believed that minorities would die out without welfare).

It was all very funny looking back on it.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago

“it's too ingrained for the masses to be simply guilt tripped to stopping slavery. It's simply too convenient.”

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago

Something really clicked for me on an emotional and moral level when I realized that meat eating was just being fussy

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago

didnt take long for the first

"I'm a vegan and this hurts our cause."

comment to show up. Ugh just shut the fuck up at that point, fucking pick-me behaviour.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 19 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"Smh those vegans didn't rip him to shreds with their bare hands, this proves the failure of their ideology" reddit-logo

In fairness when I saw the sub was called "crazy fucking videos" I knew it was going to be full of shit.
