[–] Mutalisk@hexbear.net 51 points 4 days ago (6 children)

actual thought crime post removal lmao

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 38 points 4 days ago (3 children)

was that the CIA backed revolution or nah

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

iirc there isn't strong evidence linking the CIA but I regardless think Hungary lost a lot of it's self determination privileges for awhile after joining the Axis. Also not sure how involved the former fascist establishment, if they were largely involved than that's more reason to justify the crackdown.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago (2 children)

wait didn't the cia literally admit to this recently

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago

Yah this is from the JFK files (linked in another comment above) where they mention using Hungarians to try assassinating Castro shortly after they fled Hungary.

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not that I have heard of, maybe I missed that.

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 28 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Here is an unredacted file from the JFK files release last year that shows them admitting that the "Hungarian Freedom Fighters were Agency [CIA] sponsored"

https://www.archives.gov/files/research/jfk/releases/2025/0318/104-10115-10074.pdf

Is that the same as admitting to orchestrating a coup? They were certainly funding groups who did orchestrate the coup. And General Kiraly, who organized armed uprisings, was a former Nazi that in the 60s was being recommended as a prime contact for anti-Cuban assets to meet with.

Anyway, there is also this article: https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/mi6-trained-rebels-to-fight-soviets-in-hungarian-revolt-1359599.html about how MI6 was training Hungarians to do a coup.

I think the main argument is that the CIA wasn't involved until after it had taken off and was never an important element. I have no idea about the truth of that, but that's what I've seen people claim when pressed, but they did admit that the CIA clearly had involvement at some point later on, it just wasn't important (which might be true, again idk).

It's not a subject I was ever heavily invested in but I think people focusing on the CIA there rather than the existing problems with the domestic movement is a bit of a conspiracy left affectation.

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

conspiracy left affectation.

you mean the people who were consistently correct about zionism this whole time while the "respectable" left was dogshit wrong?

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I've certainly encountered conspiracy leftists who are dogshit wrong about zionism, but this seems like kind of a weird fight to pick since that wasn't the topic at hand.

Am I following right that you are identifying yourself with conspiracy leftism and therefore, seeing a negative remark about it, are trying to tee up what you believe is an open-and-shut defense of it by pivoting to another topic?

I don't even know what you mean by "respectable left" unless you mean Chomsky types but then why is that a meaningful argument?

[–] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Firstly, I'm arab - we have long been smeared by Westerners as all conspiratorial and anti-semitic when we said anything bad about Israel. Including by Western Leftists. So there's your starting context for why this is problematic and how it's weaponized for Zionism, including by the very type of people who populate this website.

I've been called a conspiracist by Liberal Zionists more times than I've been called an anti-semite, they are interchangable left-punching tactics. Calling socialists conspiracists for claiming factual actions of the CIA is another way this manifests. It's a left-punching attitude with built in pro-Liberal normalcy bias.

We now know for a fact that the CIA was heavily involved in Hungary and the "conspiracists" who claimed it all along, the "tankies" were correct the whole time.

The respectable left (aka the Electoral Left and Synthetic Left) is everyone from Bernard to Mamdani to Chomsky to the DSA to Jacobin to Current Affairs to prominent journalists. Every single prominent and public leftist in the West basically. This site was run by 'respectable left' admins who had latent zionist biases, and there was a massive struggle session over it. The kind who call everything anti-semitic and conspiracy theories, while cleaving to the 'normalcy' of public opinion. For an overly online example, compare r/socialism to r/trueanon basically, which one has more correct opinions and organic growth/activity? It's the "conspiracists" not the "respectables".

For a less online example, I stopped attending DSA when younger because I was called a conspiracist and anti-semite for bringing up criticism of Israel and the US involvement in Syria.

Liberal Zionism among the left is heavily concentrated in the electoralist and squishy types. Principled anti-Zionism is heavily concentrated among the "tankies" and "conspiracist" wings.

The "anti-semitic left" and the "conspiracy left" turned out to just be the actual left, who were correct about everything. Israel and the Epstein affair has proven this in the last 3 years.

This site was run by 'respectable left' admins who had latent zionist biases

generous in both the past tense and the word “latent”

It’s worth considering it as an early bridge between partisan insertion ops and color revolutions. I’m not convinced that it was US intelligence but it was def reactionary.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago

Lol imagine defending the fascists retaking Hungary because you hate communists so much. As always, anti communists are pro Nazis

i'll directly defend it.

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 31 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's no fucking way that's the real reason they gave wtf. Let me check.

Holy shit it is. That's the fucking reason they gave? I thought it was because of like, leftist disunity or something. It's my mocking of he term tankie that got my post taken down lmfao.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

incredibly funny how hard they had to stretch an already asinine rule to justify removing it lmao.

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

They were literally looking so hard to find a reason to remove it. It's like, I tangentially made fun of a term that's common there and because of the exact origins of that term that means the post is in support of suppressing the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Like wtf,

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 23 points 4 days ago

They think they're so slick and so clever, but they're just so damn pathetic.

[–] pleiades@lemmy.ml 16 points 4 days ago

that sub looks more like it's turning into socdemmemes

[–] goferking0 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Weird how non of the mods show up as being the one to do that in modlog. Or I'm doing modlog checks completely wrong and non of the mods have done anything for months while actions keep happening
