But it's Bezos! I'm not giving Bezos any more money.

The new Critical Role cartoon series is out as well, and despite being a fan, I ain't watching that because it's on Prime. (I'm also not pirating it btw, I'll keep hoping that it'll eventually get released on BluRay or something)

Y'arr

(A bit like y'all, it means all the arrs. Not to be confused with Yar, that sleeps with the Tar.)

Y'umptoo?

(Are you all also going to do it as well?)

Y'itpdrwitii?

(Is the poop deck really what i think it is?)

A Blu-ray release would still be giving money to Amazon, since it's their production, though...?

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

But not ongoing payments. And I'd own physical disks so that I can watch it whenever I like without paying more.

You have a very weird moral system you've set up there for enjoying entertaient media.

  • won't stream it because you dislike the corporate owner.
  • won't pirate it (even though all the show makers/actors/artists/etc are already paid at that point, just leaving the corporate owner you dislike)
  • will buy it as a once-off purchase (still supporting the corporate owner you dislike).

Yep that's confusing me.

Not if they wait long enough to buy it second hand, well at least not their purchase. Just a matter of how long they would be willing to wait.

I'm also not pirating it btw

Any reason why?

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Out of principle. If I can't legally access the content (whether out of refusal to pay a billionaire anymore money or any other reason), I won't consume it in any other way.

When I was a poor student I pirated a lot, but now that I'm making money, I'm making the concious decision to not pirate anymore.

So in this case it means, unless they get released on physical media, I won't be able to watch it.

It's out of principle that I do pirate things. The entertainment conglomerates have used their money and power to completely warp the copyright system so that it hurts the public and benefits them. They've abused it so that it doesn't even benefit artists anymore. As some have said, lengthening or strengthening copyright at this point is basically just like giving a bullied kid more money. The money goes to the bullies and the kid just gets beaten up again.

Why would you think it's morally right to obey an unjust law?

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago

You make a compelling argument.

I don't really want to faff with VPNs and such to get my stuff either, so there's that too.

I have plenty of DVDs and BluRays (most bought at goodwill stores) to last me a while.

[–] hayvan@feddit.nl 3 points 1 month ago

Good for you for sticking to your principles. My approach is a bit different. If I can't buy it in way I get to keep it, it's high seas time!

[–] Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

I would guess they want the Critical Roll crew to get paid, and there are far better ways than passively giving them watch time on a streaming service.

Edit: I don't follow them, but maybe they have a patreon?

Edit 2: I just realized that since they distributed through Amazon, they probably can't distribute their own content. So sail the seas or feed the beast, I guess.

I got my start in print publishing via Amazon and they pretty much own whatever I published through them. It's easy to jump in, difficult to climb out.

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 2 points 1 month ago

I wish they would put their cartoon also on their own streaming platform Beacon. But alas, Bezos prefers exclusivity.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I imagine if you buy merch from them, they keep a lot more than their share of the streaming revenues. Beacon probably also gives them more money directly. But, I imagine that in Hollywood having a big successful show on a major network is probably better for your career than making money in ways that the Hollywood press doesn't report on.
