the lower the stakes, the more petty the tyrant becomes.
i worked in western academia for a decade. i saw things unfold that i did not even know how to react to. we're talking screaming in meetings/on phone calls over imagined boundaries of "turf", title policing, emails in all caps with abusive language to poorly paid/untrained staff for not using honorifics.
theres a reason the academy is #2 in the US (behind the military) for workplace bullying statistics, and its because the training to become an academic never includes or requires any soft skills.
to be fair, its not all of them, but the bad actors run amok and never seem to get called on it unless they publicly confess to something that brings negative attention to the school.
Exact same thing happens in open source software. Many are just there for the love of the game and commit access is as clear a power delineation as can exist. Holy fuck you meet some absolutely malevolent children.
Professors can get away with a lot of shit, too. Blatantly racist remarks and targeting get swept under the rug unless there's a news story about it
