When is one of these state governors going to just straight up say "what ICE is doing is illegal and unconstitutional. we won't let you do this. leave now or be shot on sight by real law enforcement"? Just going "nooo, please don't do thiiiiis" while armed masked thugs kill people in your streets isn't doing shit to people who don't care about the law and think they'll always be in power.
Well... The governors are gonna get a lot of flak from their constituents when Trump responds by calling in the Marines and the Army.
I think that's the main reason it hasn't happened.
When it does happen (and I expect it will at some point), I just hope Trump leaves the Air Force out of it... I dread the possibility of that bastard launching air strikes on political opponents while they sleep.
Do you honestly think the cops are going to do anything?
They will just refuse to enforce the laws they disagree with while playing games on their phones and looking for black people to assault. Same as always.
Okay, so open citizen enrollment and empower them to. Probably could get a volunteer force with no pay at this point.
Not that I disagree with the sentiment, but that would "officially" start the second American civil war. And despite the fact that we've basically already begun it, the politicians are all hoping things aren't really that bad and we can vote our way out and everything will go back to normal.
There needs to be a much bigger demonstration by the people before they risk anything.
You are right. We at only "unofficially" at war so the people are the ones dying
We wouldn't want Nazi cop blood spilled.
... that is essentially what ICE is. A bunch of racists with guns who want to shoot people.
Guess what? They don't shoot the people you want them to.
And a state run militia is literally a civil war and will result in the army getting called in to put them down. And you can bet the brave men and women of the us armed forces will have no problem murdering and raping people without the 12 hour flight to get there.
Orgs like The Black Panthers have always walked a very fine line. Yes, they are technically a terrorist organization by most (modern) definitions of the term. But they ALSO put way more effort into winning over The People than anything else so the only way to really root them out is for the government to get their Tulsa on.
And considering basically the entire news media is complicit with the christofacists at this point... it won't take much to turn public opinion and decide that "Yeah. Chicago really IS a lawless land that is worse than Ghaza and everyone there needs to be rescued. Send in the marines"
So don't do it like ICE. Do actual background checks, don't just hire anyone with a gun.
So... spend months getting a system in place to evaluate potential militia members and a year training them so that they are less likely to kill each other every time they reach for the gun they left in the backseat.
Yeah, I am sure trump and the christofacists will wait for that. "Give us a year and we'll put a stop to you! Okay, maybe two".
Also, that is still a state run militia and it still becomes a civil war.
What other choice do we have at this point? Fight back or just comply and die anyway ? That’s not freedom
Exactly. If Governors/state legislatures authorize use of force in one way or another to stand up to them we might actually see some effective resistance.
I am sick of these "so do something" comments when everybody knows that if you aren't executed by ice you will be arrested by your local PD, prosecuted and likely go to jail. Basically asking people to throw their life away to maybe take out a couple of immigration officers out of like 20k. That's not resistance, that's stupidity.
Agreed. Forming second amendment militias is literally a right we have and we better get to it. The presence might bring decorum, organization and and accountability to this terrorist group rampaging through our streets.
That is a different question. There are plenty of things that can, and can't be done to fight back. And... maybe those are the kinds of conversations to have with local community organizers rather than strangers on social media?
But just because you want to do something doesn't mean what you want to do is at all a good idea or will serve any purpose. And understanding those shortcomings is the difference between resistance and roleplaying.
I strongly disagree and I think state backed militias should be formed. I also find your tone very condescending
They are shooting exactly the people Trump and Bondi want them to.
There’s a huge contradiction here when you say that the black panthers who feed and clothe people in their communities and call for positive change that benefits everyone are a terrorist organization and white nationalists organizations go unscrutinized year after year until they are running around the streets shooting people execution style with state backing…words matter and that sounds like government koolaid to me
The Black Panthers (in their various incarnations) are an armed organization that actively uses the threat of gun violence to keep The Enemy at bay. That is literally a terrorist organization.
Does that mean they don't do good? Of course not. Just like plenty of organized crime groups have historically been the only people looking out for the community.
But it is very much a balancing act to control public opinion so that people support and defend their local gunmen rather than turn them in so that they can stop living in terror. The Troubles in Ireland are a "great" example of how rapidly this can shift once a cold war goes hot, as it were.
So no. This is only a "contradiction" if you don't understand that words have meaning and that meaning isn't based on how happy you are.
You can engage in discourse without resorting to condescension. You weaken your arguments.
If the only way you can be convinced by an argument is if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy then... you are pretty much what The Algorithm has made you. Maybe work on that. Or keep tone policing. Up to you.
But hey, I'll keep in mind the importance of making you and others feel good when I... literally respond to what someone said.
Law enforcement would likely not execute this order even if given it.
Which, if anything, is evidence the police should have been fired and the whole system retooled a long time ago.
I'll stop beating around the bush and just say it: I know why dems won't stand up to MAGA no matter what ICE does to their constituents. It's because they're as greedy and authoritarian as the rest, just wearing a mask of civility and wielding softer power. They're letting it happen because they will find a way to enrich themselves regardless.
Of course, but until qualified immunity is repealed, Democrats have plenty of (non-conspiratorial) motivation not to give police orders that they know the police won't follow: it makes them look like weaklings.
Both parties pretend that law enforcement is under democratic control. It is not.
Republicans obtain the loyalty of law enforcement by catering to their demands, providing them moral support, taking their side in nearly all disputes, and telling them they can do "whatever the hell they want" to quote Trump. Republicans are less afraid of what the police might do when unleashed, and are reasonably certain that the police will follow their orders because of all of this.
It also helps that what Republicans would order a LEO to do are the things they already want to do (i.e., harass, arrest, and even murder brown people, liberals, and anyone else who gives them lip).
There are options.
I don't think Americans are even willing to admit to themselves that law enforcement, even in ocean blue regions, are not under democratic control and the orders elected officials give them are mainly suggestions.
I understand not wanting to believe this as it is deeply disturbing. But things cannot be changed until basic realities are understood.
I would say that while neither group is under full democratic control, that local and state LEOs are at least hemmed in somewhat by often living amongst those they are policing and are usually experienced enough to know that following some of their most block-headed instincts (e.g., no knock, no announcement entries into residences) will earn you a bullet in the face as if you are a home invader, and that if the shooter survives the encounter, the system will likely let the person who put the bullet in you walk.
ICE are brazen because while they are not a new force, they haven't had significant enough field experience in America to know that rules of engagement aren't followed solely to protect the people subject to your patrols.
Case in point, look at the LA county sheriffs. Known to be home to multiple gang members from at least 1970.
Police are rarely under the strong (or even weak) control of elected representatives in the United States (and probably anywhere.)
Trump wants escalation and violence. Then he can use the Insurrection Act and it’s all over. Remember these are swing states being targeted.
Not saying any of this is ok or justified, but it is part of a pressure cooker strategy and all the state governors know it.
I got news for ya: the martial law and brutal oppression of all American people is inevitable if MAGA isn't stopped. It's not a matter of them only doing it if we get out of hand. Every day is another step they take toward the goal of total subjugation.
Honestly? I agree.
But you also have to pick and choose a battlefield, as it were. The christofacists have pretty much the entirety of the news media behind them. That is why people globally insist "nobody is resisting" because... those protests never get any air time. And it is nothing new. Look how fast the news media was to condemn Trayvon Martin (and the many others like him) as violent gangbanging thugs while completely ignoring the lunatic who stalked and murdered him.
Look at Minnesota. The people being murdered are poets and nurses. And that is building up outrage to the point that even the news media can't run a smear campaign fast enough to stop (localized) general strikes.
Contrast that with gunning down people who are screaming "wildcats" and shooting back. It becomes "both sides are bad" and we roll in the military to make sure there is no more unrest. And while the LA Riots were not as violent as the media wanted to portray... there was a LOT of footage to distract people from Rodney King.
As a bit of hope, I suggest people look at how the Influencers are handling this. No, not fucking Hasan. Outlets like MinnMax are a great case study. Roll back two years and Ben Hanson was more or less stiill toeing the Gamergate era line of "we are apolitical and here to enjoy games". But as things have gotten much worse, he (caught up with some of his contemporaries) and has become explicitly political and making sure that the audience is aware of what is going on in Minneapolis.
Yes, doing a fundraiser... is a real liberal ass thing to do. But the point is less the money (which genuinely does help) and more forcing people to understand what is going on. Because it is way too easy to duck into our comfort zones when the world is collapsing around us... we have been doing that for decades. But when those comfort zones make sure people understand? It stops being "Ugh, fucking Anderson Cooper is yapping again" and instead becomes "My online personality I have a parasocial relationship with is just a normal person like me. Why are they worried?"
And... that goes a LONG way towards doing what the news media SHOULD be doing. So that when the next person is murdered... because there will be a next one, people understand that it is a human being who was killed and not some fentanyl dealing monster who just happens to look like a school teacher.
There are more ICE/CBP personnel in Minneapolis than state and local law enforcement combined.
Even if the Minnesota FOP hadn't explicitly endorsed ICE, they still wouldn't have the numbers to do anything about it...
ICE didn't teleport into the state. They're not all standing in the same place at the same time. There are options. I mean, other than flopping on the floor and going "NOOOOO" like Stewart on Mad TV.
The option you are seeing is the one that the people of Minneapolis (who experienced violent unrest related to policing in their city recently) have chosen.
The people out there protecting their neighbors in MSP are showing incredible guts, cleverness, and solidarity.
So sure dump on the people who voted for this, dump on useless cops, but the private citizens of that area have stepped the fuck up and are putting their bodies on the line for their community.
What the people in MSP has nothing to do with a lack of courage and if you can't see that you need to take a nap and wipe your eyes.
Oh the people are doing just fine. It's the people they elected who are doing fuck-all and I'm tired of them letting the federal government tread on their constituents.
Okay? They didn't have to teleport into the state to have 3000 ~~agents~~ armed thugs in Minneapolis.
You've seen the numbers they show up in, right? They basically swarm each area they visit. Even if you redirect enough local law enforcement to present a forceful deterrent, another ICE posse will just pop up somewhere else and wreak havoc.
They have more numbers, and that's a plain fact that you have to recognize because no amount of wishful thinking will get around it.
If you can get a few thousand armed Minnesotans to communicate with each other, coordinate in an organized fashion, and patrol the city and outlying neighborhoods in large enough groups to present an effective deterrent, then that's an option. But good luck making that a reality...
