Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Question:
How can a person who has these type of documents and accusations about them ever be allowed to run for any type of political position? Let alone become the president of a country (twice)?

[–] nao@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wasn't it something like:

  • 1/3 voted in favor of him
  • 1/3 voted against him
  • 1/3 couldn't be bothered
[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I prefer a third voted against. A third voted for. And a third enabled it to happen, either by protest or ignorance.

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

My FIL is a Die Hard Conservative. He refused to vote for Trump... and Harris. He didn't vote for either to "send" a message. I told him a bigger message would be to vote Democratic but he "could not" bc they are forcing kids to be transgender. I told him to prove that and he could not but he saw it on Faux New or News Min and it had to be true.

I asked him if he knew Faux News was settled on a 750 million dollar defamation case for the lies spread about Dominion voting sustems. He did not and said the 2020 election was a fraud.. you can't get through to these people

[–] Xatolos@reddthat.com 31 points 3 days ago (4 children)

It's because legally, having a criminal record doesn't disqualify you from running. There isnt anything preventing this. Most likely its to help prevent a minor mishap from long ago condemning your future abilities (otherwise, you'd have all sorts of small charges against every politician to destroy their career. It would make the worst blackmail material).

Now, morally why did enough people vote for him anyway is a whole different issue that I don't have an answer for.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It's also so that someone can't weaponize law enforcement on their political opponents. So let's say you're president. You come after me on a bogus charge. I've now got a record. I can no longer run against you.

Morally, I agree entirely.

Crazy to me, that, this is all true, I can become the president, can’t vote for it. Assuming it’s a felony.

Edit: I have educated myself, and this is not the case. I am not a felon, do not have any experience lol I’ve just, incorrectly, heard, that you can’t vote if you’re a felon.

[–] TexasDrunk@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah, felonies are more complicated and on a per state basis. A lot of media has flattened it into this binary thing.

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I know loads of adults with no "minor mishaps." It's not just normal to have a criminal record, they had no reason to do that. They just assumed no one was dumb enough to vote for criminals

[–] SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I know plenty of people with records. Few of them are white. Fewer still are white, cis, straight, and ablebodied.

If you look a certain way or dress a certain way, law enforcement tends to look for opportunities to harass or arrest you. So no, I don't think it should be illegal to hold office as a felon. (I'm also against felons having their voting rights taken from them.)

[–] Stormy@thelemmy.club 3 points 2 days ago

Hey, ok you're right. I'm sorry.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago

even if you are imprisoned. there was this discussion that trump could serve as president from a jail cell.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Sure but that is easily fixed by making certain crimes bar you from running for example, being a pedo

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (3 children)

But you don't understand, the only other choice we had was a lady....

[–] MJKee9@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Come on. That lady didn't believe exactly everything I believed. How could I vote for someone who is not only a female, but someone who didn't believe exactly what I believed!?!?

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And she was black or something

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

And she might drag the entire country into a pointless war on a whim, just because she felt like it

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She could get her period and randomly abduct a foreign leader!

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She never gave birth how could she know what its like to be a mother and love children? Vote for the rapist male.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Exactly if you’re ever voting and on won hand yoy have let’s say a know rapist felon who wants word war 3 and simps yo anyone who hand him something shiny like some sort of braindamaged crow… and the other hand you have a women. Yuk, gross, they have more bodily fluids than I do and I flat out don’t trust it.

Who knows what a woman would do with power!

[–] seejur@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

Better half penis than no penis at all! /s

[–] Vespair@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

Because he told the worst people in the country that he would hurt the people they don't like.

Honestly that's it, that the whole thing. There's nothing deeper than that.

Trump told racists, bigots, evil people that he was going to hurt their enemies, so they voted for him.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Good portion of people don’t give a shit.

I’ve spend the past three years trying to get people to investigate the sexual and physical abuse of children in Oklahoma, including some child trafficking. No one cares or wants to do anything about it. More people than we want to admit are okay with children being raped and abused as long as they are a certain type of child (foster kids usually.)

[–] zip@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You're absolutely correct. From one of the kids in Oklahoma who you were talking about, who was failed hardcore by law enforcement, the courts, the Church, supposed family, fuckin' everyone... Thank you for recognizing it, believing it, and trying to get shit done about it. I genuinely mean it with all my heart. I'm sending a big internet hug your way. <3

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

A considerable amount of the American general public is criminally ignorant, willfully terrible, or both.

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Remember that every time you imagine the American voter.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

First time in the USA?

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Because the “opposition” still thinks waving signs and doing parades counts as “action”

[–] AngryRedHerring@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Because they were kept secret by his accomplice.
