Pet Allowance (lemmy.world)

sad sad mommy @noahsarca

i love the quebec pet allowances they are so silly it's like a riddle

Number of pets allowed

Usual limits

A total of 8 pets are allowed (among the allowed species), including the maximum permissible for dogs and cats.

Up to 4 pets are allowed, including a maximum of 3 dogs.

Examples:

  • You can have 4 rabbits, 3 dogs and 1 cat.
  • You can't have 4 frogs and 4 dogs.

dogs ≤ 3
cats + dogs ≤ 4
others + cats + dogs ≤ 8
others ∈ Allowed Species

[-] watersnipje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 5 months ago

Lol this helped me understand the text, thanks.
Does an aquarium of fish count as one pet, or does every individual fish count?

[-] intensely_human@lemm.ee 6 points 5 months ago

It depends on whether you have MERGED the fish

[-] anguo@lemmy.ca 22 points 5 months ago

Also, fish do not count towards this limit.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago

Two cats, a dog, and sixteen full grown swordfish

[-] sukhmel@programming.dev 10 points 5 months ago

Bluefin tunas will do nicely, too, they grow up to more than half a ton

[-] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 months ago

Jesus, how much money do you think I make? Put the tuna back, we're getting a guppy....

[-] sukhmel@programming.dev 20 points 5 months ago

Not sure if cats + dogs ≤ 4 I read It as not dogs ≤ 4

I guess that your ruleset comes from the mention of including the maximum for cats and dogs and maybe those are the only ones that are called pets but 🤔

[-] wandermind@sopuli.xyz 23 points 5 months ago

Yeah, I'm very confused by the "8 pets are allowed" and "4 pets are allowed", it reads to me like "You can have 8 pets as long as you have at most 4 pets" which obviously makes no sense.

[-] anguo@lemmy.ca 18 points 5 months ago

It's just badly translated. In French it clearly says maximum of 4 cats and dogs, of which a maximum of 3 dogs.

[-] hallettj@leminal.space 10 points 5 months ago

My god, that's so much less stupid!

"You can have up to 8 animals, all (something) authorized species. Fish do not count toward the 8 animal limit.

"Of those 8 animals, you can have up to 4 cats and dogs, with a maximum of 3 dogs."

Both the English and French versions are on https://montreal.ca/en/topics/pet-license

[-] sukhmel@programming.dev 8 points 5 months ago

So it's a trick maths question that actually requires you to know French and have seen these rules in it, seems legit

"and these are my pet cats over here, and my working cats over there"

[-] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 18 points 5 months ago

This gives me integer linear programming flashbacks...

So I can have 12 cats if I have -8 dogs?

[-] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

It's quite heavily implied the above is only defined in ℕ

In Germany my colleague has to send a photo of his turtle every year to some gov/municipal agency, to track it’s growth and prove that is not an exotic/illegall type (which could only be seen when they get bigger)

Where can I apply to be a pet pictures officer?

[-] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 months ago

Is this a WFH type job? If so, I'm fuckin in!

[-] Badeendje@lemmy.world 51 points 5 months ago

3 huskies, 4 wolves and a rooster.. wake up bitches..... awooooohhhooooo..

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 17 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I've cross-bred eight different dogs with various species of fox, so they all count independently.

Also, jesus christ the smell.

[-] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 8 points 5 months ago

A fox pooped in my yard the other day and fuck that I don't want him back.

[-] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Foxes are "prominent poopers" and I have several areas in my (rural) yard where foxes proudly display their turds. Atop an 8x8 fence post, a raised cement culvert opening, a mound of loam I never got around to landscaping with. They are replaced every few days, I find myself noticing the seasonal diets of the local foxes. It's lizards, small rodents and fruit for the most part. Very occasionally birds.

[-] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

He pooped in my window well and it looked like he shat out 3 full mice, hopefully this doesn't become a thing.

I get a lot of rabbits in my yard, and he's been visiting for a while to hunt them without leaving poops like this.

(Edit: actually I think it's a she, there's a den about 200m from my house and she had two kits last year, if you went for a walk in the morning you would often see them chasing rabbits in and out of the tall grass)

Trade one of the wolves for a bloodhound and you can get some real harmony going.

[-] DillyDaily@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

But then you'd have 4 dogs, 3 wolves and a rooster, and that's against the rules.

What you need is 2 huskies, a bloodhound, 2 wolves, a kakapo, a howler monkey, and a rooster. For best results, duct tape your kakapo to your monkey.

Makes sense to limit how many you can have, so you can't have ridiculous number of cats or dogs in a small space. But it gets complicated with smaller animals and since they all have different space requirements.

[-] intensely_human@lemm.ee 17 points 5 months ago

You may have up to seventy kilograms of dependent biomass under your care.

... So my neighbor's Akita is too big to legally own.

Edit: actually it's just barely within it, but some mastiffs can absolutely weigh more than that.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 9 points 5 months ago

Does seem silly to say someone can have 3 dogs and 4 cats but can't have 9 frogs/snakes/birds

[-] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 15 points 5 months ago

"I have an ant farm with like 986 ants."

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago

You must choose 4.

[-] NotMelon@lemmy.world 28 points 5 months ago

What about 5 frogs 2 dogs and a cat?

[-] uservoid1@lemmy.world 37 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Not allowed. You can have a maximum of 4 items of given pet type, 3 for dogs. You will have to give one frog away.

What's the value of 3 frogs in cats?

[-] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Pretty low, as the frogs are most likely dead at that point

no mention of horses, pigs, spiders or other inverts, so are those banned or not? seems like someone in admin really hated pets

[-] uservoid1@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

They don't want farm animals in residential area, and I'm pretty good with no Arachnids list. And of course Goose is twice on the banned list to make it clear.

You have one cat. It gives birth to a litter of four. What do?

[-] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 31 points 5 months ago

Believe it or not, jail.

[-] uservoid1@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago

When a dog, cat or rabbit gives birth, the puppy, kitten or kit may be kept without a license for a maximum of three months.

[-] Technoguyfication@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago

You have to get licenses for your pets? Wtf?

[-] ImplyingImplications@lemmy.ca 15 points 5 months ago

How are they going to enforce pet limits if you're not required to register your pets? It's an annual tax per pet. It's also meant to encourage people to spay and neuter their pets. The money goes towards administering and enforcing the pet by-laws. It's usually something like $10 per pet that cannot reproduce, $50 per pet that can.

I just want to know who in their right mind would want to have 4 Rabbits, 3 dogs, and a cat all in one house

[-] hansl@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago

I have a friend with three kids. They had at one point 3 rabbits, 2 dogs and a cat. They don’t live on a farm, but they do have a large property (countryside).

When I was in college I had a classmate who was living with 5 roommates in a large house and had 8 cats amongst them. No idea if it was legal then or if the landlord even knew.

It's like saying, if you can't figure this out, you aren't worth the one extra dog you have, please give it away.
