The author is a right-wing turd contrarian. The NYT loves such people to death. He even wrote a book where he complained and ranted against the civil rights movement because of course he did.

Trump made them believe that they were out of touch (which they were), but instead of doing any sort of introspection, they decided that it meant they had to get more right wing and thus began to hunt for the same type of right wing freaks as the National Review.
