“The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken. The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner,” the coroner said

Well, they're not lying. It was related to his continued well being and how that was an issue for the police who wanted that money.

“The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken. The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner,” the coroner said, adding that more information will be released in the coming days.

This is so sinister lol

the-pigs "Whoever keeps saying 'High-speed chase' better watch their back! This was a high-speed wellness check janet-wink And I'm sure you all know what that means."

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 3 days ago

Or their were reports of him being suicidal. That would explain several things. The lack of info currently given about what happened (hippa violations) why he was being followed though there's no reports of a high speed chase or that he was trying to flee from the police. Then, how he went over into oncoming traffic to hit a semi truck head on.

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 18 points 3 days ago

Yeah, police love killing suicidal people.

[-] engelsaxons@hexbear.net 82 points 3 days ago

This has real "he committed suicide by shooting himself twice in the back of the head and throwing himself in the river" vibes to it.

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

Mystery Men's "He fell down an elevator shaft onto some bullets" has always been my favourite one of these phrases

Death to America

This article is so confusingly written. If all the police resigned WHO were the police chasing him? Why is the coroner commenting on the reason for police pursuit? Who was the council member the police chief was complaining about and how did they have the power to cut police funding?

[-] Yukiko@hexbear.net 39 points 3 days ago

The county police. The town’s force resigned.

[-] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

Are you sure? The article doesn't say that anywhere

[-] Yukiko@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago

McColl Mayor George Garner II collided with an 18-wheeler during a chase with county police, days after the town’s entire force resigned.

[-] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 15 points 3 days ago

That paragraph is not in the article

[-] huf@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago

it is for me. it's between the title and the article itself, just beneath the MYSTERIOUS sticker, and above the byline.

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

Not for me. The para I get is:

McColl Mayor George Garner II veered into eastbound traffic and collided head-on with an 18-wheeler during the police chase. Garner was connected to an active investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, sources told WBTW, though details of the investigation are not clear.

Is south carolina a county? Idk I'm not from USA.

[-] Barabas@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

You're quoting different parts.

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 18 points 3 days ago

Doesn't appear on mobile it looks like. What a weird design choice

[-] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

It changes (visible/invisible) depending on the size of the window. I noticed resizing it on a desktop triggers the behavior too.

[-] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

South Carolina is a state. For reference its the cultural heart of the Planter Elite and the first state to seceded from the union in the Civil War.

It's in the subheading under the headline at the top. But yeah, badly written article, normal for Daily Beast.

[-] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

Odd, it appears on the Hexbear preview ignore 1.02k notifications

But not the article itself (anymore). Must be a cached version

The towns Mayor, the Honorable George Garner was elected in 2022. Mayor Garner inherited several deficiencies with the water and wastewater departments operation and maintenance. The town is currently under contract with a certified operator for compliance requirements and the towns field crew of two is responsible for the maintenance. Upon the mayors inception the town was only using one field crew member for all the field duties throughout the town. It was evident the town needed a larger workforce when the compliance violations started coming to the surface. The mayor was also dealing with an inherited debt from a previous engineering and construction firm that is crippling the towns ability to move forward. This past relationship with that firm involved construction projects that were mismanaged and in particularly one incident which caused a sanitary sewer overflow. This incident ended in enforcement action and a fine to the town.

One of the most important things the mayor has been pushing for is to get the town’s financial audits up to date. The municipal audits had not been completed for several years and the town is not eligible for water and sewer funding assistance because of delinquent audits. The office staff an the mayor understand how important this is and have been encouraging the auditors to complete this as soon as possible. The town anticipates their audits should be up to date by the end of 2023.

I wonder how that went

oh. Didn't file the audit for 2023 either

thinking-about-it

The sicko was defunding police to fund water/wastewater services and public parks!

Town of 2000 voed these people in and the profesional bullies felt harassed and attacked and had their corrupt cash cow cut...er hampered their abilities to harass the towns people.

Sounds like a Thin Bile Line gang and power hungry Police Chief wanting to have all the latest hamas-base training and playing the victim card. All that modern tanks rolling around town of a size of 2000 and going off for Nazi and Krav Maga training. It's a town of 2000, not 200,000.

the overall creation of a hostile work environment perpetuated by a specific Councilman,” adding that he has experienced “unwarranted and malicious behavior aimed at undermining my integrity and leadership.”

In his post, Hale, pictured here frothingfash, also said a “significant amount of money was cut from our already depleted budget by the same Councilman upon his arrival to his elected position.” He said he repeatedly asked for funding to “modernize equipment, enhance training, and increase staffing levels” to no avail all-my-apes-gone

In May, a now-former police captain was accused of misconduct, assault and battery. Before that, the then-police chief resigned, citing a hostile work environment allegedly caused by Garner.

Further from his fedpostingbook post

The safety of the residents and the well-being of the officers should have been prioritized by committing the necessary resources to build a department capable of addressing the complexities of 21st-century policing. Sadly, this was not the case and **the majority of my tenure as Chief of Police was spent clearing the names of my officers as well as myself, from the numerous falsehoods that were made against us.

This decision to resign was not made lightly, and I deeply regret the impact it may have on the community we have dedicated ourselves to serving. However, I believe that stepping away is the only way to shed light on the severity of these issues and call for accountability and change.

I remain hopeful that the Town of McColl will come together to address these challenges, prioritize ethical leadership, and create an environment where those in public service can perform their duties free from undue interference and hostility.

Ethical leadership? Denying extravagance is "undue interference and hostility"? Who runs the town piggie? It isn't the damned sheriff.

A hostile work environment is when town elected officials don't let you roid rage in your fascist fantasy and rob the town blind.

[-] huf@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

it is demonstrably the cops who run that town. they just did a demonstration. political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.

FUCK the Daily Beast, they were just referencing a NY Post article that was referencing this local news that's much better: https://www.wnct.com/news/mccoll-mayor-dies-in-crash-he-was-being-investigated-by-sled-and-pursued-by-deputy-for-own-well-being-officials-say/

On Nov. 21, just five days before the crash, police chief Bob Hale and his five officers resigned from their post. Hale announced the decision in a Facebook post, and said he left because of “repeated acts of harassment” and “personal attacks” on his character by a town council member.

Hale added that the council member cut the police’s funding upon assuming his position.

“This lack of investment hampered our ability to operate at the standard the citizens of the Town of McColl rightfully expect and deserve,” he said in the post.

[-] blobjim@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

It'll be interesting to see if any larger US govt organizations come in to investigate and what they "find". I assume they would just help them cover this stuff up and get more funding to the cops.
