China responded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's claim that at least 155 Chinese nationals are fighting alongside Russian troops, with a Foreign Ministry spokesman advising against "irresponsible remarks" and reiterating China's desire for a peaceful resolution.

It's incredibly irresponsible to tell the truth if it makes China look bad. Zelenskyy is going to get banned from .ml now 😔

Tell on us once, death on you

[–] Frjttr@lemm.ee 39 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Instead of condemning, they should just stop. But that’s China for you 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 17 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They are probably not soldiers, but rather mercenaries. I doubt China would deploy official forces like NK did.

[–] Frjttr@lemm.ee 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I doubt Chinese mercenaries can work anywhere without CCP approval.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 16 points 2 days ago

China is huge, it'd be hard to control everybody. But who knows, China is also really into controlling people. Either way, some evidence would be great.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 8 points 2 days ago

Saying "those are just mercenaries, we didn't send them" would have also been a perfectly fine response by China. But then I suppose that would be admitting that there are Chinese people that the CCP can't control.

Don’t tell us what we’re doing! Only WE tell us what we’re doing! >:(

China reminding me that they are a country not of conscience and reason, but of pride and honor posturing. One could expect some foreign soldiers, but that response is just pride facade. I always have high hopes for them. Hope is strong.

Yeah, China has been investing heavily into facade and public perception for a while now. I'd love to see Ukraine coming up with some proof, but if they don't, it will cast a bad light on them. That said mercenaries from all world are fighting on both sides, it'd be odd that there where no Chinese.

Nah, China needs to provide some real point other than "You bring us great dishonor", Ukraine has far more credibillity than China ever will. I still have to do that mental operation where I assume the reverse of anything they say is the truth or at least the starting basis for thinking about anything they're involved with

Even if its true these were mercenaries totally unconnected to the government, accusations like these are totally fair game by reason of association. China shouldn't be hitching its wagon to Russia particularly for these war crimes. They're in bed with the stink, they gonna smell.

They bring great shame to and by themselves

Usually the burden of proof is on accuser's side regardless of how you feel about the accused. Also Ukraine, specially at the beginning, made many not-that-true claims. It's war, they will lie if that suits them. And you're right, Chine is also often denying the obvious.

This is not a criminal court and Chyna needs to earn a better reputation. They can start by telling their bitch Russia to pull the plug or join the rest of the world is sanctioning the shit out of tuem

There was a video on a Chinese soldier on my feed earlier. I suppose they could have translated him incorrectly, but he was claiming that Ukrainian forces saved his and his fellows soldiers lives when Russia attacked with chemical weapons.

Pretty sure it was on noncredible defense though so, it just as easily could be a joke?

[–] sun_is_ra@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What country in your opinion does have conscience ?

[–] positiveWHAT@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

At least Sweden, Finland and Costa Rica

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hasn't Ukraine literally captured & interrogated them? I thought China was supposed to be good at "saving face"?

Footage of Zelenskiy's response:

[–] Paul_1958@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just hand over all the Chinese bodies, and denial is then impossible

[–] Railcar8095@lemm.ee 4 points 2 days ago

"Looks Russian to me", "that passport is fake", "they were living and working in Ukraine legally, not fighting"

There, denied.
