People who complain about gatekeeping forget that there are very legitimate reasons gates are put up in the first place.
I don't know why we would ever want to bring redditors here. I think redditors should leave when they have had enough of reddits bullshit, and if they like the 'verse, settle in. Redditors who are convinced to come will tryta recreate reddit vibe that i deliberately left. Too many breathless debatelord milksops, they can stay in their reddit slophole

Guys cmon, look at this whole thread and have some self-awareness.
We've all got aspects of reddits worse qualities in our niche topics of interest, and the tribalism here isn't that much of an upgrade from the reddit hive mind.
We have no right or authority to gatekeep people joining, all we can do is give them the option and shove them from instance to instance until they finally settle on an echo chamber suittable to our/their weird tastes.
That exist in any social media, the issue with Reddit is the bots and the corporations changing narratives and antagonizing human interactions.

I hated the AI ragebait that infested some subreddits. Most of the front page posts on AITA were AI posts after a certain point. You could tell for a few weeks since they all used an en dash β in the post. Itβs not something most regular people would use, as a regular dash - is what most people do online.
I donβt miss the bots, the corps, the ragebait, and the bad actors. Iβm thankful to have Lemmy.

I'm not sure I can bring myself to create an account on that site. I can't listen to people whine about how difficult it is to pick a server. "ergmagerd, the choices I have to make are so difficult :cry: :cry: :cry: why do I have to choose between a generalist, furry, lgbtq and tech server :tears: :tears: :tears:" and the "it looks like shit" people who forget how old.reddit.com looks like.

old.reddit.com is still the only usable way to use Reddit. Whenever I find something in a web search that leads to Reddit, the majority of the content on the page is hidden unless I change the URL to old.reddit.com.
The fact that they've conditioned the majority of users to prefer the new site means it's not the place for me anymore.

doesn't RES do that anyway?
Maybe there's an option somewhere, but at least back when I installed Old Reddit Redirect, it either didn't exist, didn't work or I didn't find it.

I was one of the people that didn't understand the decentralization until Reddit went pure enshittification and I had to get used to it. I know it's not so bad but it's just a UX thing.
I'm here now, so it turns out to be nothing but it can be confusing to users if it isn't clear what's going on.

To be quite contrarian here:
When people whine about how something so simple is difficult, the appropriate response is to listen.
Mandatory instance selection as an active choice during the registration process is unacceptable friction unless we specifically intend to retard user growth.
But once we rope some new Fedifriends in and they start commenting and appreciating the site⦠hit them with the technical!! May need foster-parent instances to take burden of initial signup.
I made one because I was annoyed at people being wrong about the fediverse.
