Not all Gen X of course, but I do find this “we’re the last generation that wants to work hard” attitude out of some Gen Xers to be supremely ironic given the latchkey slacker stereotype of Gen X that persisted until the early 2000’s.

It’s definitely not a generational thing, there’s just some people that are just born itching to become old people. They want nothing more than to be grizzled old hand bemoaning the ne’r do wells younger than them so they can put themselves on a pedestal.

What's annoying me lately is the effort people seem to be making to try and turn gen Z into mini boomers too.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The pattern with The Discourse surrounding the youth is always, opinion writers talking about the sort of young people they’re around as representative of the generation as a whole. Which ends up meaning the kids of their rich friends and/or the young people that have the connections to get internships at their legacy media company. So yeah, right now that slice of gen z is wallowing in the sentiment that Trump gives them permission to be hedonistic and proud of their social status.

There’s a new steaming piece of thinkpiece shit every day about Gen Z. The one I saw the other day was about Gen Z “bare-backing,” which refers to, wait for it…….. the refusal to work while off the clock. I wonder what bullshit portmanteau op-ed writers are going to come up with next to describe a normal thing that already has a normal word for it

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I got fired from my one of my first jobs like 15 years ago for refusing to work off the clock for free lol

[–] uSSRI@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I wish i had recorded my boss calling me and telling me to keep working off the clock when I was a minor. I'd own that gym now.

I’m going to need some help with the barebacking metaphor. Aren’t metaphors supposed to make sense?

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Well that’s the thing about being a think-piece writer, you can just say shit and consulting firms around the world will treat your word as gospel

Why is there such a big dip in lead levels at 40.

[–] dead@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

To explain the graph. It's a graph of people's childhood lead levels based on how old they were in 2015. Someone who is age 40 in 2015 would have been born in 1975. Each color on the chart represents percentage of that age group, which had a certain level of lead present in their blood as a child.

The reason for the high childhood lead exposure is probably explained by the use of leaded gasoline. Leaded gasoline started to be phased out around 1990. Leaded gasoline was banned in the US in 1996. As you can see on the chart, someone who is born in 1995, would be 20 in 2015 and it shows that less than 20% of people born in 1995 had childhood lead exposure.

Lead exposure to children causes permanent brain damage, which can lead to behavior problems later in life, including impulsivity and aggressiveness. What I am implying is that people born before 1990 inhaled lots of leaded gas exhaust and now they have behavioral problems as adults because of it.

A 2015 study found that half of all living Americans had been exposed to medically concerning amounts of lead as children and I'm thinking it meant mostly Gen X and Boomers.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No I understand the graph, I meant 40 specifically has low levels compared to years on either side.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They started to phase in unleaded gas in 1975 but I guess it had started a couple years earlier, not for health concerns but because it damaged catalytic converters.

[–] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

doesn't explain higher levels in subsequent years tho

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah I was wondering if there was an angloid backlash of "I actually prefer leaded gasoline and will proudly huff the exhaust fumes because this is AMERICA."

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Replying a year later with that is so funny.

[–] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He really needed to make sure everyone knows how much he hates millennials

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Really not beating the "GenX are slackers" allegations that he has surely forgotten about, courtesy of the leaded gasoline fumes and long COVID.

This isn't that bad as youtube comments are often filled with Nazi slop but I have this weird urge to see hope for humanity in the comments sometimes and uhh.. catgirl-flop

[–] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

lol never in a YouTube comment. like searching for hope in a hellpit

[–] lorty@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 1 month ago

I hate that this BS even got to my country where this "divide" doesn't even make sense in our context.

[–] LocalMaxima@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

back in my day we had warfare over the Duchy of Aquitaine lasting generations, now the generational warfare is in YouTube comments. World has gone soft.

[–] supplier@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

partiotism "Everyome born after 1945 is a boomer"

[–] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

No generational warfare but anti-boomer generational warfare anarchy

You really must not have much going on in your life if the only thing you can be proud of is the year you were born lmao
