Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Crank nonsense always makes me laugh.

Like, the government somehow managed to hide the entire economic output of the country for a year being funneled into a bunker complex.

No one asked where a years worth of GDP went

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 40 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm skeptical of the figure as well, but I can see trillions being funnelled towards something like this over decades. I mean just look at Pentagon budgets alone that can't accounts for billions each year.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

the pentagon has lost "trillions" multiple times in the past 25 years...

knowing that administration, it's in a floodplain and requires a tanker of diesel every year to keep it from being 90% underwater.

and this was done on purpose to "give Texas a seat at the table".

obvious crank shit but it is something I was kicking around in my head. if these ghouls knew they had a 100% guaranteed safe zone to go to they really have nothing to lose from nuclear war.

they already have a death drive and are bored of the modern world and it's hedonistic splendors.

many fantasize about recolonizing some empty, last-of-us abandoned world and carving homesteads and kingdoms from it (but with genetically "pure" settlers! and robots! and modern tech!)

obviously this would not be the world that awaits them but i doubt they care.

so some (and likely more as time goes by) may think doing a full MAD apocolypse is just a simple "reset" button. flip the tables, start fresh. even better if they know a few hours ahead of time.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's my thinking as well. We also know billionaires are building these kinds of bunkers, so wouldn't exactly surprise me if the political class was doing the same.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

obviously as we both know, one and the same. Although in our developing neo-feudal system, I suppose the less wealthy political class is basically the equivalent of sniveling courtiers these days.

begging and pleading to be chosen not to be locked out of the keep (billionaire lux bunker)

I think that's part of the reason they're salivating so much at the idea of having AGI and self replicating machines. Because it means they could just get rid of 99% of humanity and replace them with slave robots.

Yeah it terrifies me. More than climate change I feel if they get to the point that they have competent AI that's been refined for energy efficiency and effective robotics including humanoid-like ones that the bourgeoisie know that this situation isn't sustainable and will choose to just create a new economic mode where they rule as aristocracy over what they imagine to be a glorious new age of expansion and rebuilding via their vast armies of machines and AI and some slave workers and so on and this conveniently solves climate change for them as well. I feel like the clock is ticking, I really hope the empire expires before 2030.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yeah I feel like the adage of "communism will win" sort of has a time limit. it will come down to us seizing the AI and automation as well. luckily China is rapidly accelerating ahead of the rest of the world.

the U.S. has to collapse in just the right way. not spectacularly violently as many hope, but with "something" to catch it and prevent the elite from smashing the big button. What that is, I don't know yet.

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah the problem is the brainworms too. If the bourgeoisie were dispassionately self-interested China could just offer them all the rights to live safe on some island in palatial estates under their protection but because of the white supremacy and fail-son/daughter effect it's not so simple.

It's not the most rational or materialist of me but I often find myself hoping that space communists with incredible levels of technology just show up and disable all the US nukes, render them inoperative or destroy them and after a big long tantrum the US finally gives up. Because it almost seems to require magical intervention of that sort to imagine a future where the white supremacist west doesn't blow up the world rather than accepting loss of hegemony. And I think China is deeply aware of this and it's why they're trying their best not to go too hard on the west and trying to find some sort of win-win situation that just drags it out into the distant future where China has more chances of developing some breakthrough technology that might help them negate that.

yeah hopefully it's just darkest before the dawn.

my own sci-fi prediction is that China cracks commercial fusion using thorium reactors as a springboard and sells modular reactors to anyone who will buy them and manufactures cheap fusion fuel.

that would basically be it. that kind of energy and thermal power available would mean generating fuel from carbon dioxide, cracking water, massive desalination, true automation, and actual AI development without wrecking the environment. once a fusion economy is actually spun up and working, it can get exponential in capability. i think this is what the U.S. fears more then anything else, but only at a background level.

they are closer and more driven then anyone else.

Imagine being trapped in one of these during the nuclear apocalypse with Elon. I'd take my chances outside then suffer him.

The trick is convince them it’s time to retreat to the shelter then, once they’re in, we block the egress points. (And ideally tap into the internal CCTV for a little something I like to call “The Greatest Reality TV Show of All Time.”

Don't forget about pouring cement down the ventilation ducts.

[–] Hotspur@lemmy.ml 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I buy the premise generally, but what makes me doubt it is if it were true, I feel like Trump would have bragged about it publicly at some point.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 1 month ago

that would be totally in character 🤣

So, the actual article makes it sound like it's just some alex-aware kind of shit.

As for how these alleged cities and facilities are powered, Fitts said she believes the government has found a way to generate breakthrough energy that she believes is being used to keep them going.
“I’m convinced that this energy exists. If you look at a lot of the really fast ships, flying around the planet, they’re not using classical electricity,” she claimed.

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

You know, I assume they've done something to replace the Greenbrier, but at the same time the odds are it's just been a crony contractor money pit with no oversight because everyone stopped caring after the USSR was dissolved by Yeltsin's coup but they still kept throwing money at doomsday bunkers because what else were they gonna do?

But this in particular is just crank shit.
