in so far as the dominant political parties in the US have positioned themselves as part of a discrete set of consumer choices that white people make and confuse with "having an identity", it's pretty spot on.

kind of like how little kids can identify corporate logos, this is taking it a step further and having an "outsider" identify the demographic for our consumer identities by splitting them along party affiliation.

I mean, the white lady in a ball cap being a Democrat is kinda strange, but I sorta know what they mean too.

People with capitalism brain cannot work through base-superstructure issues of sociology in their understanding of culture, especially because their understanding of culture often comes from high culture which in history was essentially the preferences of the ruling classes.

This is a perfect continuation for them into the liberal era because it's a sign of liberal progress. Where once Kings told you what food was good, capitalist oligarchs give you the choice to decide what food you think is good, based on what choices they feel like you should have.

i think thats fair maybe the japanese political commentators are less cringe than i thought

They nailed most of the stereotypes but are Apple and HP really considered partisan by anyone?

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

apple: smart, creative class, upwardly mobile, affluent, NPR

HP: poor, rust belt, shouting about the propane bill, Luke Bryant, ketchup sandwiches, applying to job at Walmart, "you're not my real dad"

I feel like Dell is more the PC brand for boomers who just want a machine to send emails and post racist facebook memes.

[–] Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I bet half those people are still rocking their old cow colored Gateways.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago

Honestly, Apple I think is definitely associated with "coastal elites" but I think they just put HP because it's not like there's an immediately obvious chud tech company. I'd like to think HP = Israel = chud is why they did it but that's probably not the real reason.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

Apple is definitely NPR coded. I guess HP is just a non-Apple manufacturer although I think Dell is probably better as a generic non-Apple company.

Holy shit that Democratic basketball player is dunking into a net that is 12 stories up.

I'd like to see a Republican pull that off.

[–] CanYouFeelItMrKrabs@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

Kaiju basketball when

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

tbf he's also like 110ft tall

[–] SovietBeerTruckOperator@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Lol, no blue state is building commie blocks, the most popular brand of electric car is build by a fucking fascist, and most baseball fans these days are nerdy ass white dudes who live major cities. Football really should have been the sport on the red side since that is more dominated by CHUDs.

but ... isn't the whole point of this cartoon that there's really no difference at all? am i just readin what i want into it?

[–] dead@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's meant to depict City vs Suburb. Most cities are dominated by Democrat voters even in red states. Republicans hate cities. Republicans constantly make up conspiracy theories that cities are full of crime and undocumented immigrants. That's why Trump always rants about "Democrat-run cities".

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Chuds are also not reading WSJ, should just be AI Facebook slop

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago (3 children)

(American) football and golf are way more culturally chud coded than baseball imo

Also I'm pretty sure the batter is supposed to be Shohei Ohtani but on the Angels to keep the red/blue color coding make sense still lol which makes me wonder how old this is

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

I guess they used baseball because baseball is pretty popular in Japan while nobody outside the US gives a shit about CTEball and golf is more rich coded.

I was gonna say (and did), baseball has become pretty hipster. I'm from Baltimore and if you go to an O's game half the people there are like breaded dudes with full sleeve tattoos who look like they just came from an Fleet Foxes concert.

[–] ihaveibs@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Baseball has the oldest and whitest fan base of the major sports quite easily unless things have changed drastically and very recently

[–] Sator_is_Tense@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

the democrat pride parade having zero non-white people is disturbingly accurate

[–] Lurker123@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember hearing a speaker talk about the cultural divide a few years ago. Apparently game of thrones was super lib team and the walking dead was super conservative team. For whatever reason that one I found very fascinating.

[–] AfricanExpansionist@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

Walking Dead was libertarian utopia. "There are no laws or society today hold me back. I can be the hero by doing what everyone else is too scared to do"

Game of Thrones was a slow meditation on the nature of power and politics that turned into lots of girlbossing.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

They're right about only chuds using HP products. BDS!

[–] charly4994@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

I always interpreted it as literally the exact same shit with a different coat of paint, the only differences between them literally are just the aesthetics.

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Umpire, put down the gun!

The apartment block vs idyllic single family home and white picket fence reminded me of this city-builder game I played ages ago, Black & White 2 where you played as god and constructed a city for your little guys to live in and got good and evil points for your actions. Building multi-story apartment buildings in close proximity to other structures earned Evil Points and building spread-out suburbs where everyone had a lawn earned you Good Points. If you earned enough Evil Points your city would begin to look more and more hellish and dilapidated.

zizek-joy my god, pure ideology

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The only replacement I would make is to swap out baseball with USian football (ie handegg football-lucy). USians looove their concussion sports.

Is Pepsi a Republican thing?

[–] porcupine@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 week ago

Maybe it’s more regional, but every Republican I know in real life with a notable soda preference makes Coke a central part of their identity. Pepsi was the liberal yankee cosmopolitan soda in my household growing up.

[–] simontherockjohnson@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 week ago

I have a feeling that it's because of the Kendal Jenner Pepsi Ad. Ironically Coca-Cola in Georgia and Pepsi is in NY.

[–] Guamer@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

Truck is way too small

[–] Maturin@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

RIP that ball player’s hip

[–] micnd90@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pepsi is chud? Or just soda in general is chud

[–] Maturin@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

It’s even the wrong color and coke is the correct color.

[–] Bartsbigbugbag@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I prefer 人民共和国 myself.

Baseball would be much more interesting to watch if peoples' penises randomly exploded like is happening in this picture.

the republican guy has very small hands. this piques my interest
