That does sound like solid advice.

[–] sanpedropeddler@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Exactly, sitting with your thoughts is infinitely more productive and fulfilling than scrolling

Albert Einstein was a notorious daydreamer and he ended up being one of the most beloved side characters in Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. Be like Einstein and stop doomscrolling.

Escaping from my thoughts is why I'm on my phone

I see a huge difference in generations. My parents generation can go anywhere and not be bored. They strike up conversations with other people even when those people do not immediately benefit them. They can sit for hours in a spot and not get stressed about it. They enjoy things.

Doom scrolling my own memories vs someone else's

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 27 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I did this in a waiting room at the doctors office. The person next to me got up and moved to the other side of the room.

People see me not on my phone and automatically think I'm a psychopath.

I mean, I kind of am, but they don't know that.

[–] tfm@europe.pub 22 points 2 weeks ago

but they don't know that.

Depends on the waiting room

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I remember when waiting rooms had a stack of magazines and newspapers to flip through

[–] Piemanding@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

I do this too, but mostly because I don't want anyone seeing what's on my phone.

It's one thing to stare at the wall or out the window of a building, but to do nothing but stare at the back of an airliner seat? That must be someone who enjoys the pains of flying.

[–] Pudutr0n@feddit.cl 18 points 2 weeks ago

This but unironically.

[–] expr@programming.dev 17 points 2 weeks ago

This is actually good advice, though.

[–] CombatWombat1212@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 weeks ago

It helps so much you have no idea

[–] Subverb@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

This is what we did before mobile phones. It wasn't that bad.

[–] Carrot@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago

This but unironically

Literally how my job expects me to act when there's no work.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Obviously this is just what we had to do on the bus or whatever; I’d have all my best ideas in this state (the sad irony being not having a notepad to hand to write them down).

staring blankly into space brings wisdom; lack of staring blankly into space leaves ignorance. know well what leads you forwards and what holds you back

Shoot dashed lines out of eyes? NO

Do not shoot dash lines out of eyes? GOOD

[–] pitaya@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago

destroy the phone with eye lasers so you can sit in peace

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Shoot both dots and dashes out of eyes? GREAT

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] BuckWylde@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a gen Xer I've been using this tactic for a long time.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Same. I prefer staring into space over posting on any social media. I had no idea I was such a devoted nazi!

[–] Shanmugha@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Warning: enlightenment possibility ahead

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, ok, not a problem actually.

[–] multifariace@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Must be nice having an inner voice.

I thought this was the Nellie's nest guy for a second
