I was listening to Ashes of the Wake and it still holds up so well and was honestly one of the many pieces of art that led to my radicalization.

I can't say i liked or even followed all their music after this album but I'd be pretty sad if they did or said something totally unhinged

Hope not. Randy Blythe has been on The Past Times a couple times now and seems cool.

I used to think he looked so fucking cool

yeah, i'm gonna need a rundown on the 'Randy goes to jail' thing because i have the most muddled memories of what it was all about

did he actually kill someone? or did they get held responsible for a death at a gig?
i can't fucking remember and everytime I hear that a metal artist might be a shitbag, i just default to thinking that they're basically a member of Pantera

I can't say I'll be that surprised if i find something out but i don't know what you're talking about tbh

so i'm back home from walking the dog and might have a min to devote to looking it up, but my recollection was:

Randy Blythe went to prison in a european country, in relation to a death. I think it was some sort of negligent manslaughter due to someone getting crushed at a gig, or someone trying to stagedive/rush the stage and Randy hit them or something. I will look this up.
I don't know if Randy had any fucked beliefs or anything, can't remember.
My comment about Pantera refers to Phil Anselmo being a white pride shitter, while Dimebag & Vinnie probably weren't much better given the Stars & Bars guitars and paraphenalia, plus associating with Phil for so long

alright @Acute_Engles@hexbear.net, here it is:

wiki of the Randy Blythe Manslaughter Case

so basically, Randy shoved a 19yo fan off the stage at a 2010 gig in Prague, and the fan sustained head injuries, went into a coma and died.
There was a bit of media at the time, but Randy was then arrested and charged the next time they entered Czechia in 2012. Randy stated he was unaware that the fan had died in 2010.
Randy was remanded for a bit, posted bail, they tied to impose conditions that would keep him in the country but he was eventually allowed to leave on bail.
I believe Randy then attended the trial in person and testified that he had no idea that the guy was injured badly, and had mistaken him for another fan who had already rushed the stage twice and Randy had already held him down and told him to stop - he has shit eyesight but performs without glasses.
The court ended up holding that he was morally responsible for the death, as he provably threw the fan off the stage, but was not held criminally liable because of failings by the venue, promoters and security to keep the stage safe.

Following that, I have no idea if he's engaged in any chud shit, but he seems both genuinely remorseful for the death and pretty considerate in other media. He's written a couple of memoirs but i haven't read em, he's sober now, don't think he's worked with anyone too fucked up.
worst thing i know about him is he worked with Brewdog (to make an alcohol free beer) lmao

I could easily be missing some shit history that people in the scene actually know and I don't, that would be understandable.
I think overall, it might just be that the "New wave of American heavy metal" may get a bad rap for its style being very locked to that time period, and it's roots directly coming from Pantera, who on reflection were a band full of shitheads

general comment as i love to self-reply:

I am so ready for a nostalgic revival of that style of metal, and have already found myself listening to Killswitch and Darkest Hour lately

[โ€“] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

My first ever concert at 14 had Killswitch engage at it!

[โ€“] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago

Look i never really listened to Pantera but even i was well aware of how similar log sounded to them lol

I think it's regrettable but i think a single action is far better than basically all the other musicians i enjoyed when i was younger so I'm going to chalk him up to not cancelled so far
