I feel like Christianity has always had a kernel of nihilism lurking in it; in the fire-and-brimstone telling that successfully took root in the US, life is essentially an eyeblink in the eternity that you'll exist and yet it's the only time when you can be tempted into actions that will ensure that you'll experience an infinity of agony. Trying to wrestle with that notion would lead to some pretty antisocial conclusions, so it just gets sublimated until the culture curdles into something like this.
