I was annoyed at first, because who the heck would do that deliberately.
Then I realized it's part of the software, so yeah it's a little quirky but also cool that it works to begin with!

Mastodon clients add ats automatically, but it's not required, like this comment.
Whoa, a digital wizard!
@cm0002@lemmy.world No, why do you ask?
@metaStatic@kbin.earth listen here you little shit
@metaStatic@kbin.earth @cm0002@lemmy.world hey now don't forget that the deeper you go in a comment chain the more names you need to tag!
@Lazycog@sopuli.xyz @metaStatic@kbin.earth @cm0002@lemmy.world why though? I don't understand it. Is it because they don't have threads?
@metaStatic@kbin.earth @cm0002@lemmy.world @atro_city@fedia.io
They kinda have threads, it's a bit of a different format and they don't have communities really. check this current post out on mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@cm0002@lemmy.world/114678153485329034
If you don't include the names your comment appears as a standalone toot under cm0002's post.
The communities on lemmy are actually hashtags on mastodon. cm0002 made this post under their own profile and hashtagged the "community" (fedimemes).
Edit: corrected myself
check this current post out on mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@cm0002@lemmy.world/114678153485329034
It just redirected me straight back to lemmy.world. (Also, Lemmy doesn't render the URL into a hyperlink correctly.)
What the hell. That is kinda neat but annoying in this case.
Try to browse this community (on mastodon the hashtag #fedimemes) and find this post, then click on the post to see this thread:
https://mastodon.social/tags/fedimemes
I hope the tag search doesn't also redirect to lemmy since its not specifying the lemmy instance in the url.
And sorry about answering you directly instead of editing the above. I believe lemmy pings the users i've tagged if I edit the post and I don't wanna annoy everyone.
Edit: words
Since I already keep notifications to replies on forever, it won't make a difference to me.
Except of course, the '@' in the text being a little distracting.
I just think it's great that more people can participate in discussion from all across the fediverse. It's pretty neat.
I love it when you got mastodon, lemmy, and friendica users in the same thread all just having a discussion. Really feels like an open network and what internet should be.
It doesn't bother me at all 🤷♂️ I get excited when I see people from Mastodon, just cause it's neat that I can talk to them via lemmy :)
TIL that Lemmy and Mastadon are linked? I stopped using Mastadon because there was fuck-all being posted, except by the news outlets that I followed, and even tags corresponding to massive fanbases sometimes had fewer than a dozen entries...
We're all part of the Fediverse which includes Masto, Pixel, PieFed, Lemmy etc all communicating on the same interoperable ActivityPub protocol
Under that is the "Lemmy-verse/Thrediverse" that is what would be "link aggregator" type social media (eg reddit) and includes PieFed, Lemmy, MBin etc.
While very cool in that it basically ruins the whole notion of centralized Social media, it has its quirks. Like what this meme is about, there's no perfect way to translate a Lemmy reply to a mastodon user or a masto reply to a Lemmy post for a Lemmy user
And PeerTube ideally, though it doesn't seem to work properly at the moment. You can see channels (as a community), but posts don't seem to be resolved.
yeah once all three level up and improve integration, corpo socials will get cooked. youtube will be a lot harder to take down but hopefully can be built on success of the the other projects to make peertube viable. it will require proper capital thought, i am not sure how will get handled but it would have to be community capital since VC cash is toxic.
It's like being invaded by Twitter.
I hate it and have blocked some instances just to avoid seeing it in the comments.
I don't see how that would accomplish anything though? On PieFed it would work, or an app like Sync or Connect that I thought people don't use much anymore, but in base Lemmy all it would do is mute the communities from that instance... which since Mastodon doesn't have communities should still allow the users to ping you endlessly, generating notifications each time?
I'm not sure whether it worked or I just happen to see fewer of those things as a coincidence.
There used to be a flurry of them a few months ago, and I didn't block anything but I haven't seen any since. I suspect they were simply testing to see if it worked, which it did but it's annoying so they stopped? :-P
