Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Trying to ban a celebration of love. 🤡🤡🤡

These politicians should have become comedians, or floormats, or anything useful.

[–] ter_maxima@jlai.lu 22 points 18 hours ago

This is how protests work : they simply cannot arrest tens of thousands of people.

[–] dodgeflailimpose@lemmy.zip 77 points 1 day ago

That's beautiful right there

When will the Hungarians finally drop the fucking clown Orban into the Donau (Danube) River?

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 42 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

people who dont live here do not know how fucked up is it. every media is owned by orban, and the countryside folk are mostly old people who dont use the internet, so their only news source is straight up propaganda.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Genuine question: do you think eliminating Orban from the political scene will seriously change things?

I lived in Hungary and interact often with Hungarian expats and I have a very negative outlook if no real cultural change is enacted.

As you say, the countryside people are just like Italian and even Danish ones, and served propaganda daily, but the level of nationalism I experienced in Hungary from almost all sides of the political spectrum tells me there is something deeper at play.

I find it plausible that Orbán and the average Orbán voter sees the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a godsent opportunity for Hungarian revanchism on parts of Ukrainian territory.

Please don't throw trash in rivers.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Got me...LOL...+1

[–] stormeuh@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pretty sure he's biodegradable

[–] Mavytan@feddit.nl 15 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Shit is also biodegradable, still not great to have in the river (in large quantities)

("The mayor announces that beer will be brewed on Wednesday, therefore beginning Tuesday people are not to shit in the brook")

[–] Mavytan@feddit.nl 2 points 8 hours ago

That's an awesome sign!

[–] stormeuh@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Fair point, he is a toxic piece of shit

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 53 points 1 day ago (10 children)

Hungarian here if anyone has any questions :>

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 32 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Me too lol if anyone needs two hungarians answering

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 3 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] camelbeard@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Question for all 3, what are Hungarians doing to get rid of orban?

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 5 points 18 hours ago

Regular protests, giving part of our tax and donating to independent media, talking to right-wing family about all the issues here, voting for the opposition. Sadly the opposition hasn't been potent lately (all 14 years of Orbán until last year). As in they were idiots. And then finally we got someone who can actually can speak to the masses (Peter Magyar) just last year and now we may get rid of Orban with the elections last year. Well that is if he doesn't ban Magyar from running.

No questions, just keep up the good fight :)

[–] Tiger@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I like to say “Slava Ukraini“ to cheer on the Ukrainians in their struggle. Is there a good such similar expression for Hungarians in theirs?

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago

Maybe the “szív szív lapát”(—>hearth hearth shovel, referring to a hearth shaped shovel implying what is awaiting Fidesz members)

[–] dzsimbo@lemm.ee 4 points 23 hours ago

Closest I got is 'bojler eladó', but it is nowhere near as heartening as what Ukraine's got.

That is a big bridge. Impressive to see that many people shoulder to shoulder.

I visited Budapest in 2015 and most recently this summer. The city subway was significantly modernized, and also felt more expensive. Overall a great experience. Curious how the last 10 years have been for you? What’s your recommendation for a place to visit in Hungary outside of Budapest?

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 6 points 23 hours ago

For urban exploring I would recommend Székesfehérvár (crowning city of the past empire)

For tracking I personally love the Bükk mountains

For bathing and relaxing I would recommend Hévíz

Has Fidesz claimed that the crowd is photoshopped yet? It's what the populists always do in Germany.

The 1% is a lot more people than I realized.

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

It's just George Soros, all the way. Different genders, clothing, but still just Soros

[–] helmet91@lemmy.world 62 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a wise person said not long ago: "the regime is trying to appear strong as granite, but in reality it's made of toilet paper".

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 52 points 1 day ago (2 children)

So many semi famous people there as well, the leader of the French greens, a famous Austrian Youtuber about modern history…

[–] JimmyMcGill@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lots of left politicians from my country there as well (and it’s quite far from Hungary)

[–] Zezzoz@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

Also from mine, unfortunately the "left" from my country is useless.
