The idea of building a life with someone that I don’t agree with on the fundamentals is so fucking wild…

[–] john_browns_beard@hexbear.net 43 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This happens all the time and I'll never understand it, usually one of them eventually changes their politics to match the other's but every once in a while you get one of these.

People really would rather be in a relationship with someone who they hate on the most fundamental level than alone.

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 44 points 1 week ago

It’s so prevalent. You’re 100% right, the fear of being alone overcomes the feeling of being stuck with someone you resent.

There is also a very real aspect of these situations that can be attributed to privilege. Many people are ignorant to their own material conditions and don’t pay any mind to how politics actually affects them.

communism is only 69% of my personality. the balance is a combination of hot-sauce-on-french-fries and always having an inappropriate amount of cat hair on my shirts.

I don’t remember posting this comment…

Me and my gf established our mutual communism on our first date

I've almost drained the liberalism from my partner. She's come a long way from regurgitating the beheaded babies propoganda at me

Same, I left a date with a girl who kept doing coke in the bathroom to talk about Appalachian mining unions and the Textile workers strike with her 8 years ago

[–] blunder@hexbear.net 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ok so the way I'm understanding this comment is that the coke girl in the bathroom was a huge trade unionist and you two have been together for eight years lol

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No lol, I just ran into my current finance while on a random date with coke girl. Ditched that date to go talk about trade unions

Installing socialist ideals in your relationship is the best relationship.

"To be among the masses and fail to conduct propaganda and agitation or speak at meetings or conduct investigations and inquiries among them, and instead to be indifferent to them and show no concern for their well-being, forgetting that one is a Communist and behaving as if one were an ordinary non-Communist. This is a seventh type."

I have to imagine that what they mean is that the boyfriend has some opinion about the USSR or Mao that they don't like or something, right? There's no way that their general attitude about class went unmentioned for five years.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 46 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I dunno, a woman who had a massive crush on me suddenly asked if I was actually a communist after knowing me for 5 years. we were playing Smash Bros with two other people I had converted to communism over those same 5 years. Apparently she thought I was just doing a bit.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 36 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Apparently she thought I was just doing a bit.

This is so fucking funny but I can totally see it happening even if you're just entirely fucking open about communism all the time, literally telling people to their faces that you support communism, and they just see it as a bit because they think you're cool and have heard communism is a bad thing so you can't possibly actually support it. I have seen this level of complete and total lack of political education many times.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I have seen this level of complete and total lack of political education many times.

This is funny because she has a massive chip on her shoulder about being higher educated than the rest of us. Gets real mad that our political conversations make her feel stupid when she's the only one with a master's.

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 days ago

You mean you don't actually have a PhD? Next your going to tell me you're not even an owl.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 5 points 6 days ago

Ahh that's the type of person that thinks a piece of paper makes them a more valuable and important person than others. It's a sort of insecurity really. It's one of the ways they validate themselves.

bit idea: overthrow the bourgeois

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

There's a huge difference between that and being in a romantic relationship with someone for 5 years, though.

Edit: I'm curious how that conversation went, though.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Very approximately:
Me: is ranting about capitalism again
M: wait, Owl, are you actually a communist?
Best friend: starts laughing
Other friend: are you serious?
Me: ...why did you think I've been constantly espousing communist ideology for the whole time you've known me?
M: well, I thought you were like, joking about it...
BF: laughing intensifies
OF: M, are you actually serious?
Me: for five years?!

Then she had a huff and went back to playing and I started ranting again (I would often use suicidally aggressive tactics against everyone early in the evening and get knocked out first so I could concentrate on ranting until the next round started (4 stock random characters low items all maps don't @ me)).

Between the autism and being raised by Marxists I've never hidden my radical leftism, so it's not like there weren't signs - me giving detailed breakdowns of the latest news and how capitalism is to blame was a regular thing, and how I converted the other two. I'd dragged them to demonstrations and chatted to the local orgs with them. I know I was so oblivious to her affection I went on a date with her without realising until she tried to kiss me at the end, but I really feel she should have noticed a lot earlier.

She got Falcon Punch'd one too many times and had to come up with an excuse to leave forever.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

Falcon Punches are really demoralizing, and in certain situations they are actually ridiculously easy to get. I once played a Sheik who was okay except for not knowing how to sweetspot the ledge, and her teleport is so slow that I can just FP on reaction in the only area where she could teleport and otherwise not die, and like half of my KOs were just that.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 29 points 1 week ago

I actually convinced my partner of 5 years of communism. Yes it did become my personality and yes I could not shut up about it but thats part of what they love about me
