It's because to Americans, communist = socialist = authoritarian = dictatorship, they're all synonyms. And they can't define any of them. They don't think of communism as like an ideology, to them it literally just means when the government has power and the more power it has the more communister it is.
I don't remember which, but some pundit unironically stated "socialism is when the government does things, communism is when the government does more things".
It's literally 1984. In that they use the word communist the way that they used "doubleplusungood" in Newspeak.
