Just write a strongly worded letter to the ghouls in training that staff your rep’s office!! They’re gonna get right on it

And I realize this is nothing new, but it feels like I’ve been seeing it more than usual recently. It’s driving me a bit crazy lol

My hypothesis is that this is because they co-opted a lot of the civil rights movement to elevate some vague sense of "nonviolent protest" to the pinnacle of political action. Obviously this applies to more things, but calling your representative is just the peak of lib action.

Everything I say is going to be entirely vibes-based, but I feel like what the education system here taught about civil rights was a lot of "Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and MLK led nonviolent protests and did that one speech and the nonviolent protests were so effective in the marketplace of ideas that we ended racism (oh and btw MLK was a moderate who would agree with Republicans today grillman )." Now libs basically think any action where you make a lot of noise without any material consequences is the best way to create change because everyone's a rational actor who will always choose the good ideas as long as you put the idea out there and "look!! it worked in the 60s!!" Couple this with the belief that we actually live in a democracy where the government will "listen to the people" and you'll get people calling their representatives and sending strongly worded letters

Making people feel like they have some sort of control over their government is so effective at pacifying these people.

education system here taught about civil rights was a lot of ... effective in the marketplace of ideas that we ended racism

That's exactly it. They completely omit MLK applying for a concealed carry license (he was denied) or how he was becoming more and more disillusioned with the US towards the end of his llife. They also ignore Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott was planned months in advance--it wasn't a spontaneous event. It was an organized protest.

The worst of it all is how liberals reduced MLK to "non-violence" and "peaceful protest." There's a difference between that and what MLK actually did, which is civil disobedience and passive resistance. He and the rest of the Civil Rights movement deliberately broke laws or got into confrontations with white supremacists where white supremacists would be the ones who got violent. Sit-ins, handcuffing themselves onto doors of segregated businesses, etc. were all done with the intent of disrupting the bottom line and hitting white supremacy in their wallets.

Libs completely vilify the NoI (there are criticisms to be made here but libs don't bring them up) and Malcolm X. They are depicted as black supremacists and terrorists, when really they were practicing self-defense. Whitey can excuse shooting homeless people digging through their trash for food, but don't you dare shoot back at the literal KKK trying to murder your children.

Something something disappointed with the white moderate, something something foxes and wolves.

It feels like more effort than just voting but it still accomplishes nothing, plus you can scold people for not doing it 'cause it's still not, like, a lot of effort.

Perfect for libs, in short.

there have been a few bills shut down alongside mass public outcry.

your rep has to be amenable to the demand to begin with.

even then it won't work for every issue

it requires hundreds of calls per rep

the effort to return ratio is probably pretty good, actually because leaving a voicemail is mechanically very easy. just don't confuse it with real organizing or direct action. ~~mamdani~~ calling your congressman isn't the revolution and nobody thinks it is.

They have foundational memories from Miracle on 34th Street and still believe that if large enough volumes of mail get delivered it proves that theirs really is a real government

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

You gotta talk to the manager, Bobby Bwaaa

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

idk, I don't call my rep because if I feel like I "can" talk to the government I'm way too likely to say something I shouldn't be saying to them. Like "PPB". I know not to talk to cops, so why would I talk to someone else who works for the fascist government?

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

i wonder if getting some email domain like a1pac.com is more likely to succeed lmao than 50 calls.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Most libs are true believers in the liberal "democratic" system.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Most people, including politicians, aren't complete ghouls immune to social pressure. Depending on where you live, your local representative probably doesn't get "fuck you" money from lobbyists and actually has to live in the community they represent. They're probably just a normal person, and normal people don't do well with getting yelled at. The US government isn't a monolith.

[–] Commie_Chameleon@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Good point. I really should be bullying my local politicians more to be honest.

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 month ago

My local politician isn't even a local politician she lives 2 hours away from the district she represents ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahhaahhaahhaahhahahahahahaahahhaahhaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I remember being asked to talk to Politicians on Twitter, ages ago, to get them to change their policies, here in Europe. walter-breakdown

You have no idea how much effort it took for me to de-lib myself and I'm still struggling .

[–] Commie_Chameleon@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

It’s tough for sure. Respect for putting in the de-libbing effort. rat-salute-2

[–] StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nowadays they mostly (actually completely) just ask you to sign a petition.

[–] RedSturgeon@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

right, there is that website where EU citizens can sign petitions and I think this is genius, in an evil way, because if change happens you can give yourself a pat on the back for contributing to it with a sort of vote and if it doesn't happen you can blame it on not enough people voting.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

This time it's gotta work.

sorry, sweetie, Mr Smith Goes to Washington actually happened and happens everyday

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago

At the start of the genocide there were a lot of campaigns telling people to call their local reps to voice their opinions.

I have never had a human pick up my calls. Always a robot telling you to voice your concern and they'd get back to you. They never did.

It can be an easy action that can be asked of people, potentially getting them more invested in fighting for whatever the issue is

Most people don't use this ask this way tho
